Senne Lammens: The Premier League's Most Underrated Goalkeeper?

The goalkeeper position has been a problem at Old Trafford for years since the final season of David De Gea, who had ended his Manchester United career with often frequent mistakes. And his replacement, Andre Onana, proved no better. Being a mistake-prone presence in between the sticks for the Red Devils.

However, that now may be changing. With 23-year-old summer signing Senne Lammens proving to be an excellent acquisition since his move from Royal Antwerp, quietly becoming one of THE form stoppers in the division.

Who is Senne Lammens?

Born in Zottegem, East Belgium, Senne Lammnes was signed in the academy setups of KRC Bambrugge and Dender before being picked up by one of the country's biggest sides, Club Brugge KV.

However, Lammens only made two senior appearances for the club before arriving at Royal Antwerp, where he saw his career properly take off.

After initially again serving as a number two goalkeeper, Lammens soon established himself as Antwerp's first choice, following strong performances during the start of the 2024-25 season.

And from the opening weeks of the season. Lammens didn't look back, earning strong praise for his performances, which included four penalty saves throughout the season. And was a multiple-time winner of the club's player of the month award.

Move to United and Instant Impact

Lammens' performances in Antwerp during the 24/25 season did not go unnoticed beyond the borders of Belgium. Manchester United, looking for a goalkeeper with both Andre Onana and Turkish stopper Altay Bayindir not performing to the required standard, turned to Lammens.

The Red Devils had also reportedly enquired over Aston Villa's World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez but chose to go forward with a deal for the much younger Belgian worth around €21 million.

At first Lammens did not immediately become the starting goalkeeper at United, with Ruben Amorim deciding to stick with Bayinder for the first few weeks following the Belgian's arrival. However, Lammens was finally given the nod in early October for his debut in a home match versus Sunderland. And made an impact straight away, helping the team to a 2-0 win and a clean sheet, their first of the season.

From there Lammens has firmly established himself as the main man between the posts for United, as following his debut vs Sunerland, Lammens helped United go on a run of just one defeat in their next nine games. A run of form which included a famous win over Liverpool at Anfield.

Instantly, Lammens proved an upgrade on who had held his position previously. The Belgian showed composure, command of his area, and ability to make key saves when he was called upon.

And most importantly, Lammens has made many fewer mistakes than Onana and Bayindir, proving to be a much more reliable pair of hands as Utd look to get back to being UEFA Champions League regulars.

What Does the Future Hold for Lammens?

Only time will tell whether Lammens holds the position of Manchester United's number one goalkeeper in the long term, but there can be no doubting the Belgian has had an impressive start to life in Manchester.

The goalkeeper recently won player of the match in United's latest game, a 0-1 win away at Everton at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, making that his fifth POTM award for the season, more than any other Premier League goalkeeper.

Lammens made several crucial saves throughout the match, as a 73rd-minute strike from Benjamin Sesko earned United a crucial three points. Seeing them up to 4th in the table and earning a fifth win in the last six, as Michael Carrick continues to impress in the dugout.

And Lammens has been a crucial part of United's turnaround following a poor start to the season. Since his debut in that 2-0 home victory over Sunderland, not only has no other Premier League goalkeeper prevented more goals than Lammens, but United themselves have only lost two of the nineteen Premier League matches in which he has started. A run including eleven wins and seven draws, a stark contrast to the form that the Red Devils had with Onana between the posts.

At just 23, Lammens is the youngest starting goalkeeper in the Premier League, making his form even more impressive. And at that age, the Belgian has at least another ten years to give at the top level, as he looks to be the main contender to take over from Thibaut Courtois as Belgium's number one for the national team.

Whether he is the long-term answer to United's goalkeeping issues remains to be seen. But right now, Senne Lammens is looking like one of the Premier League's strongest shot stoppers and one of the best signings from the summer window. With his impact on United clear for all to see after another impressive display at Everton on Monday night.
