Merseyside Derby - who has played for both?
Tonight sees the 246th clash between rivals Liverpool and Everton, and over the years the derby has featured some world class players, but some have had the audacity to play for both teams. Let’s take a look at some of those who have worn both red and blue in the city.
A notable name in recent years is Conor Coady. The centre-back started his career at Liverpool, but made just two appearances for the club back in 2012. He then signed for Everton in 2022, where he would make 25 appearances, scoring twice. Coady is now playing for Leicester City.
Let’s go back around 20 years now and speak about Nick Barmby. The former England international signed for Everton in 1996 from Middlesbrough and went on to make 116 appearances for the Toffees, before jumping ship to Anfield in 2000, where he would go on to play 44 times for Liverpool. Barmby spent most of his career at Hull City, his boyhood club, where he retired in 2012 including a brief spell as manager of the club.
Gateshead-born Scotland international Don Hutchinson wore both red and blue in the 1990s. He joined Liverpool from Hartlepool in 1991 and went on to make 42 appearances before signing for West Ham in 1994. A few years later, he would sign for Everton and would go on to play for the Toffees 75 times, scoring 10 and assisting 11. Hutchinson retired in 2008 and has since worked as a pundit for Talksport and TNT Sports.
A winner of the league, the FA Cup and the Charity Shield, David Burrows enjoyed great success at Liverpool between 1988 and 1993. But in 1994, after a brief spell at West Ham, Burrows would sign for Everton, and went on to play just 19 times before a five-year spell at Coventry City. Burrows retired in 2003 at Sheffield Wednesday.
Based on recent reports, it sounds like there could be another player to add to this list in the near future - Ben Doak. The 19-year-old is currently on loan at Middlesbrough from Liverpool and has caught the eye of Everton manager David Moyes, a fellow Scotsman. Doak’s price tag has been reportedly set at £30 million, with Bournemouth and Crystal Palace also interested in the Liverpool youngster.
