The 16-Year-Old Wonderkid Who Could Play in Three World Cups in Nine Months - and He’s on Chelsea and Man United’s Radar

People talk earnestly about the sheer amount of football that professionals have to play in the modern era.

Few will forget the haunting image of Barcelona star Pedri, lining up at the Olympics for his 73rd competitive match of the season whilst cutting a figure akin to a ghoul. Or, you can look at the general observations made regarding the FIFA Club World Cup that was played out not long before the start of this season, which followed an already-gruelling regular season and an international break for a lot of the players involved.

But over in Mexico, one future superstar is set to rack up a feat that few in the sports history could probably compare to - featuring in three different versions of the prestigious World Cup in the space of just nine months.

That player is 16-year-old sensation Gilberto Mora, who currently plies his trade for Liga MX side Club Tijuana and has already earned three senior caps in the Mexican national team, bringing heavy interest from the likes of Manchester United and (obviously) Chelsea along the way.

Three World Cups Gilberto? That's Insane

Gilberto Mora is stunningly in line to take part in three different World Cup tournaments this season - the currently-underway Under 20's World Cup in Chile, the Under 17's World Cup in Qatar and the real deal, the World Cup itself in the United States at the end of the season.

One of these tournaments is already underway, with Mora playing a starring role for the Mexico Under-20's over in Chile at the moment, registering five goal contributions in just four games with Mexico making their way to the quarter-final stage at time of writing after demolishing host nation Chile 4-1 in the Round of 16 last night - with Mora assisting Tahiel Jimenez for the opening goal after just 26 minutes of action.

Next month, the U17 rendition of the tournament is set to get underway with Mora still in contention to appear in the tournament, as he is only 16 years of age. He's made 30 appearances for Mexican national teams across all age levels including the senior side, and has been described by some as "the best 16-year-old on the planet".

And, at the end of the season, Mora will be in line to make his way up into the United States to take part in the full-fledged dizzying heights of the senior FIFA World Cup. He already has tournament-winning chops in the game with the senior side, starting the final of the Gold Cup back in July of this year against the United States, playing 75 minutes as Mexico ran out as 2-1 winners to win the competition for the 10th time in their history.

The Teenage Talent Lighting Up The World

Gilberto Mora may not quite be a household name just yet, but there is every reason to believe he will be at a breakneck pace sooner rather than later.

He made his senior debut for Club Tijuana back in August 2024, helping himself to an assist on his first-team bow against Santos Laguna in a Liga MX affair. He broke two records in doing so, becoming Club Tijuana's youngest-ever player and becoming the youngest player in Liga MX history to register an assist.

Not even two weeks later, he would break another record by scoring his first senior goal in a 2-1 win over Club Leon, becoming the youngest ever goalscorer in both Club Tijuana's and the Liga MX's history at the age of just 15 years and 320 days. A stunning accomplishment for such a young player.

It wouldn't be long until his talents caught the eye of the national team. Mora was first capped by Mexico at youth level as part of the Under 15's back in 2022 - bare in mind he would have been 13 at the time, two years within the age cap for this level of play. He would keep shooting up the ranks ahead of his years in the months to come, and he captained the Mexico U17's side at the age of just 15.

At 16, he made an unofficial debut for the senior Mexico side in an unofficial friendly match against Brazilian Serie A side Internacional back in January 2025. From there, he would make the 26-man squad for the senior side again for the Gold Cup, making three appearances for Mexico on their way to winning the tournament whilst grabbing his first national goal contribution with an assist against Honduras.

Described as "one of the most outstanding players in the lower divisions of the team" by Club Tijuana's coaches as a child, it's little surprise to see Mora's stock rising so quickly in an era where debuting players seem to get younger and younger. Give it a short while, and it will be even less surprising to see this Mexican prodigy lighting up the world stage even heavier.
