The 5 Best Post Fergie Manchester United Signings

11/03/24 20:26

Last time we did one of these lists we looked at the five worst signings of the post Fergie era at Manchester United. Let’s be honest there is a lot we could have picked from for that. However, at Football Park we aren’t all negative. We know that not every single signing United have made since Sir Alex left has been awful. Even if the majority seemingly have been. And this time we are going to prove it.

We present to you Football Park’s list of the five best signings of the post Sir Alex Ferguson era at Manchester United.

  1. Alejandro Garnacho

Is this a cop out? Maybe just a little bit. Alejandro Garnacho was brought in at the age of 16 for £100,000 from Atletico Madrid. He spent a lot of time in the youth squad but still fairly recently he was promoted to the first team where he has looked a natural.

One of the most gifted young players in the world right now Garnacho shows his quality week in week out. Just look at the unreal goal he scored against Everton earlier this season. Still at such a young age, the future looks bright for Garnacho. So we had to include him on this list.

  1. Zlatan Ibrahimović

Manchester United signing Zlatan seemingly came out of nowhere but even at 34 Zlatan showed just how good he was tearing the Premier League apart. In a way that only Zlatan can.

28 goals in his opening season including two in the League Cup final against Southampton Ibra came and conquered England. He was a key part of the squad that won the community shield, league cup and Europa League scoring vital goals throughout.

He may not have been at the club for that long but considering he was brought in for absolutely nothing it was a pretty impressive move from Manchester United.

  1. Ander Herrera

This may come as a rogue shout for a lot of people. But we are sure Manchester United fans can agree that Herrera had to make the list. A £29 million move in the summer of 2014 Ander Herrera was brought in from Athletic Bilbao and became a fan favourite very quickly. Especially under Jose Mourinho.

He was a loyal member of the squad that constantly worked hard and put in top performance after top performance. The one moment that stands out is when he marked Eden Hazard out of a game against Chelsea by basically sticking to his side the whole time.

Herrera loved the club and still almost certainly does. As shown in an interview with the club where he broke down at the mention of leaving. A fantastic player that doesn’t get the recognition he deserves from football fans a lot of the time. Herrera was a brilliant signing.

  1. Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw has had a very up and down time at Manchester United. When he was brought in he was a young player with a lot of potential. He started off decently but a double leg break put a halt to his progress.

After returning he seemed very 50/50. Almost like he wasn’t the same player. But in recent years Shaw has shown his class. Becoming a vital part of the United backline. A threat going forward and can do a job defensively as well. Luke Shaw has to be one of the first names on Erik Ten Hag’s team sheet.

  1. Bruno Fernandes

Who else would we have chosen?

There is certainly a case for Fernandes being the best player at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Let alone the best signing.

£60 million + add ons in January 2020 was all it took to bring him to the club and that looks to be an absolute bargain. The numbers he put up in his first season were nothing short of remarkable and he went on to get the captaincy at the club just a few short years later as well.

Does he moan and complain a lot? Sure he does. But that doesn’t stop him from placing some of the most unbelievable passes you will ever see and scoring goals in vital moments. Arguably without him United aren’t where they are now or where they have been in the years since he joined.

Underrated for sure. Bruno Fernandes has to be the best signing United have made since Sir Alex.
