Five Things You May Have Missed in the Premier League This Weekend

05/11/24 14:59

Another Premier League gameweek has come and gone, and left in its wake a much changed Premier League table. Following the final whistle in Fulham’s dramatic late win over Brentford, it was confirmed that during the course of the weekend, 16 sides had changed position in the table.

It may not have been the highest scoring set of Premier League games, but there was still drama aplenty, and mainstream media once again failed to bring you all the action you deserve to see. So here are five things you may have missed in the Premier League this weekend.

5. The Premier League table

Now, I realize this might appear the opposite to something you may have missed, but bear with me. Take a second to look and analyze the standings, and you will find some interesting storylines.

Firstly, and arguably most importantly, teams between third placed Nottingham Forest, and 16th placed Everton are separated by an insignificant 10 point margin. Newcastle, Bournemouth and Fulham all lie on 15 points apiece, while Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea all sit on 18 points.

These barely perceptible margins between sides are precarious; each team knows that with just one slip up, their table position could tumble, sapping any positivity and morale the dressing room previously had. It is also good for neutral fans, as with just one weekend of unexpected results, the league table can look unrecognisable to how it did before, keeping the league unpredictable.

However, the close proximity of the top 4 four to the lower mid-table sides is not the only curious tale here. Chelsea are in the top four for the first time since signing Enzo Fernandez, and Nottingham Forest lie in a Champions league spot after playing more than a quarter of the season, and yet find themselves as close to 12th as they do to league leaders Liverpool.

There are certainly more storylines that I don’t have space to address, but what I will say is examine the Premier League table after every game week; there will always be something in there to surprise you.

4. Chalobah’s Goal Line Clearance

Crystal Palace’s visit to Wolverhampton’s Molyneux was arguably the game of the weekend. A chaotic scrap between two struggling sides from start to finish, it was truly a surprise that the game didn’t finish 4-4.

Palace gave up possession for the majority of the game, with Oliver Glasner’s side opting instead to hit them on the counter-attack and from resulting set-pieces.

They caused Wolves all sorts of problems in the first half, and around the half hour mark, earned a second corner of the game. Whipped towards the back post by Daichi Kamada, center back Marc Guehi rose highest and nodded it back across and into the six yard box to a waiting Trevoh Chalobah.

The ball had taken a deflection off a Wolves head, and fell slowly to the Chelsea loanee, presenting the perfect opportunity to open the scoring for the visitors. Yet somehow, he missed the ball completely with a swing of his right leg, instead letting it hit his trailing left, and the ball inexplicably ricocheted backwards.

And yet that wasn’t the most bonkers part. The deflection fell to Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta at the edge of the six yard box, with the goal gaping and Wolves keeper Jose Sa in no-man's-land.

The Frenchman struck it towards goal, but Chalobah, who was now in an offside position and had yet to move after missing his own opportunity, inadvertently found himself in the way of Mateta’s goal-bound strike, and somehow managed to divert it wide.

It was a five second period that would give any manager nightmare’s; two golden opportunities from a combined distance of nine yards out, both of which failed to find the back of the net.

Chalobah would redeem himself by opening the scoring in the second half, ironically from a much tricker chance, but Palace would draw the game. How different things could have been if Mateta and Chalobah’s positions had been switched.

3. Leif "Van Persie" as Ipswich Draw Again

Ipswich have become something of an enigma in the Premier League. They have led on the scoreboard in five separate league games this season, and yet have failed to take three points from any of them. They simply do not seem able to capitalize on winning positions.

On the plus side, they are more than capable of keeping the scoreline level, and have so far drawn five of their ten games so far, the most of any side in the division, and their entire points tally comes from draws against Fulham, Brighton, Southampton, Aston Villa, and most recently, against fellow promotee’s Leicester City.

Despite failing to make another lead count at the weekend, what Ipswich fan’s will truly remember the game for is a fantastic goal by left back Leif Davis.

Davis, who has seen the club go from strength to strength since joining them in 2022 during their time in England’s third tier, has always had an eye for goal involvements.

In his time with the Tractor Boys, he has scored on six occasions, and has assisted on a mind-boggling 34 more, as he helped them to back-to-back promotions. Many clubs would have brought in a replacement for the former Leeds United man, but so far this season, he has displayed more than enough quality to prove he belongs in the Premier League.

His goal against Leicester was the epitome of his quality. Making a driving run down the left flank into the box, he was picked out by an inch-perfect lofted pass by club captain Sam Morsy, and found the ball arriving at his feet on the run.

99% of players would have taken a touch, brought the ball under their control, and looked for a runner arriving in the middle of the box, but not Davis. Instead, he set himself, taking a couple of long paces, and leathered the ball with his left foot without breaking his stride.

The ball sailed past a helpless Mads Hermansen in goal and into the far bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations amongst the Ipswich faithful. Loyal Premier League fans will remember that Robin Van Persie became known for similar outrageous volleys, and the Dutchman will have been watching that finish like a proud father.

Though Ipswich would draw the game thanks to a 90+4 Jordan Ayew equalizer, at least they have a legitimate goal of the month contender to bring away from the game.

2. Harry Wilson Heroics

Fulham continued their promising start to the season with a 2-1 home win to Brentford. On paper, the scoreline indicates that it may have been a good game, but Fulham vs Brentford is hardly a must watch game. However, the manner in which victory in this London Derby came about was the stuff of dreams for the Cottagers.

Fulham were the dominant team in the opening quarter of the game, and left winger Reiss Nelson squandered a couple of really good opportunities to put his side in front, but saw Mark Flekken deny him on multiple occasions, while missing the target on others.

Fulham paid for their wastefulness, as Vitaly Janelt’s jackhammer of a shot rifled into the Fulham net just before the 25 minute mark.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank made the executive decision to have his side sit back and protect their lead, and after scoring, Brentford rarely threatened, but as the timer slowly ticked towards 90 minutes, Fulham became increasingly desperate, and more and more often would end up shooting from distance more in hope rather than expectancy.

10 minutes from time, Fulham coach Marco Silva made the brave decision to bring former Arsenal duo Nelson and Emile Smith-Rowe, in favour of more long-term Fulham servants tom Cairney and Harry Wilson, and in the second minute of added time, his decision was rewarded.

Adama Traore found a pocket of space on the right hand side, and whipped a trademark ball in towards the six yard box, where Wilson was waiting. With the ball arriving at hip height, Wilson improvised a wonderful, backheel-type flick to send the ball on target.

The ball seemed to be looping over Flekken for eternity, and just when fans thought it would agonizingly miss, the ball dipped slightly and nestled in the very top left corner. Fulham had their equalizer, in brilliant fashion, and there were still over four minutes to play.

Brentford went back on the attack, and seconds from time, Mads Roerslev picked the ball up in a similar position to Adama Traore for Wilsons equalizer. Opting for a low, driven ball into the box, it was measured perfectly, and arrived at the feet of Fabio Carvalho on the six yard line.

With the goal at his mercy, Brentford thought they had stolen a late winner, but Fulham keeper Bernd Leno came to the rescue, flying across his goal line to deny the Portuguese midfielders low effort. Fulham had miraculously been given a second chance.

And my goodness did they take it. Just a minute later, left back Antonee Robinson, who had played an exceptional game himself, chipped the ball into towards the penalty spot, where Wilson was lurking once again. A cross with little power, Wilson once again had to improvise, this time throwing his head at the ball and torquing his neck to the limit.

Redirecting his effort towards the near post, the ball, once again looping torturously, nestled in the corner, to instigate bedlam in the stands. Fulham had made life exceptionally difficult for themselves in a game they should be winning routinely at home, but the only thing that will matter to the fans are the three points, and even better, the fashion in which the Cottagers clinched them.

1. Are Nottingham Forest European Contenders?

I can tell you that at the start of the season, noone was predicting Nottingham Forest to be in the race for Europe, with must expecting them to once again face the threat of relegation.

While Forest brought in a number of new players of the summer, very few were well known, and their most expensive signing was the relatively inexperienced Elliot Anderson from Newcastle. Moreover, much of the squad is the same from their relegation fight last season, which they only just survived.

And yet, after a whole pre-season with the squad, Nuno Espirito Santo seems to have found a perfect formula. His side has conceded the second fewest goals in the division with seven, while Kiwi Chris Wood is in remarkable form, finding himself second in the goal scoring standings with eight to his name, with only Haaland ahead of him.

Pitched against an out of form West Ham United this weekend, it didn’t take Forest long to find Wood again. In the 27th minute, Jota Silva shifted the ball to his left foot and chipped a lovely head height ball into wood, who simply had to cushion the header into an empty net.

Things went from bad to worse for the Hammer’s when midfielder Edson Alvarez was sent off in added time in the first half, after receiving two yellows in eight minutes. From this moment on, Forest were in control.

They continued to apply pressure in the second half, not content with just a one goal lead, and after much pushing and probing, they found it. Anderson played a free kick short to Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has had a new lease of life since joining the club.

The winger’s clipped shot/cross hybrid was going on target, but at a very saveable height and pace for Lukasz Fabianski in goal. However, the faintest of flicks off the head of a West Ham defender redirected the ball past the outstretched arms of the Pole, and the ball crept into the far corner.

Forest had doubled their lead, and yet they were still not done. 12 minutes later, former Chelsea youth graduate Ola Aina found himself with the ball in an advanced position on the right flank. Cutting inside, he ran into West ham center back Jean-Clair Todibo, seemingly ending the move.

However, through a turn of fortune, the ball fell back to him on the bounce, and after a touch to get the ball out of his feet, Aina obliterated a rising left-foot effort into the top corner, with Fabianski once again helpless.

The Nigerian had sealed the three points, and the stunning finish was just the icing on the Forest -shaped cake.

Nuno Santo has created a team very few will want to play against in upcoming gameweeks. Forest looked exceptionally disciplined, good on the ball, and they have a lovely mix of different threats in attack to keep their opposition guessing constantly.

If they continue in their current vein, there is no reason they shouldn’t find themselves in an unexpected European battle.
