Who Should Millwall Target Next In Midfield After Luongo Deal?

Millwall have started to rebuild their midfield after losing the key players of George Saville and George Honeyman, as they have signed Massimo Luongo from Ipswich Town. The Australian international was an integral player in Kieran McKenna’s side, as he played a crucial role in the Tractor Boys earning back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.

However the Lions still need to strengthen their defensive midfield options ahead of the upcoming season in order to make a serious bid for promotion. This article takes a look at five potential midfield candidates Millwall could sign this summer.

Darko Gyabi

Gyabi has spent the last one and a half seasons on loan with Plymouth Argyle from Leeds United, having joined Argyle midway through the 2023/24 campaign. He then spent the entirety of the 2024/25 season with the Devon based club, already having over a year’s experience playing Championship football.

Gyabi also has experience at international level, playing two games for England’s Under-21s after climbing through the youth ranks.

Despite the Pilgrims getting relegated from the second-tier last season, the 21-year-old was one of the few bright sparks in that Plymouth team. His ability to play as a box-to-box or defensive midfielder fits the profile of what Millwall are looking for and has the potential to be a very exciting signing if the Lions choose to pursue a deal.

Leeds have set their stall out and want in the region of £3-4m for the former Manchester City academy player. The Peacocks wouldn’t make any profit from the deal, as they purchased Gyabi for £5m as part of a swap deal involving Kalvin Phillips in 2022. It would be a lot of money to part with, especially as the Lions need to add another one or two midfielders to their squad.

Lewis Travis

Having been on the radar of Millwall for a couple of years now, Lewis Travis might find himself wearing a Lions shirt by the end of the transfer window. The club have been admirers of Travis since 2023 and even had a bid rejected for the Blackburn Rovers man back in June of the same year.

The Rovers club captain has seven years of Championship experience under his belt, as he has been part of the club’s first team since the 2018/19 campaign. He went on loan to Ipswich Town for the 2023/24 season, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old is another defensive minded midfielder who is a more experienced option compared to Gyabi. He can play in more advanced positions, offering some versatility to the squad enabling tactical changes and shifts in formation. These qualities make Travis a like-for-like replacement for Saville, further enhancing the benefits to acquiring his services for next season.

With only a year left on his contract, Blackburn reportedly want in the region of £2m for their skipper, otherwise they would lose him for free at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Alfie Devine

The 20-year-old Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has registered interested from Millwall over the last couple of weeks. Despite the young prospect not having a wealth of experience in the Championship, he has been on loan at fellow English clubs Port Vale and Plymouth Argyle. Devine has the potential to flourish if given the opportunity, and Millwall could end up being the place where he is given that chance.

The attacking midfielder spent the first half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Port Vale, who played their football in League One during that campaign. Devine was recalled by his parent club in January 2024 and was immediately sent out on loan to Championship side Plymouth Argyle for the remainder of the season.

This was because Tottenham wanted the Warrington born midfielder to play at a higher level despite Devine getting regular minutes and enjoying his football at Port Vale. During the 2024/25 season, the 20-year-old went on loan to Belgian side Westerlo, accumulating six goals and an assist in 32 appearances with the club.

Therefore a permanent move for Devine is a genuine possibility for both parties, as the young prospect could prove himself in the Championship for a club chasing promotion to the Premier League.

Ryan Wintle

Wintle has just left Millwall after being with the club on loan from Cardiff City for the 2024/25 season. He made 22 Championship appearances for the Lions, scoring one goal in that time.

The current Bluebirds player specialises working under pressure and recycling the ball, qualities which are needed to sustain attacks and prevent possession being lost. He was mostly used when Millwall manager Alex Neil opted for a defensive shape, as Wintle would be used to create a solid spine within the formation.

Despite this he was unable to put a string of starts together, which had an impact on his consistency throughout the season. The 28-year-old would either be used when a defensive formation was required, or as a substitute in games.

However if he was given more playing time in that double pivot role in midfield, he could become a far more consistent player. I don’t see Wintle as being one of the star players of the team, however he could easily turn into a reliable starter who you know what you’re going to get week in and week out.

Paris Maghoma

Another player who has come through the Tottenham academy is Paris Maghoma, who now plays his football for Brentford. The 24-year-old joined the Bees in January 2020 and has since gathered experience at multiple EFL clubs.

Over the years he has played for AFC Wimbledon, MK Dons and Bolton Wanderers, with a potential move to the Lions being the perfect next step up in the central midfielder’s career. He spent the whole of the 2023/24 season with Bolton, registering 12 goals contributions in 37 League One appearances.

However last campaign he didn’t go out on loan, instead staying with Brentford making 12 appearances for the club in all competitions. Maghoma would develop better as a player getting regular first team football, which is why Millwall could be the perfect destination for the 24-year-old.

The Lions could benefit from having some younger players in the heart of their midfield, which is why the move would benefit both sides. Either way one thing is for sure, Millwall will need to add players to their midfield to achieve the ambition of promotion to the Premier League.
