The recent news that Tottenham had agreed to a deal for Conor Gallagher came as a shock to many, not because of the cost but because anyone in their right mind would choose to go there at the moment. The midfielder was also wanted by Aston Villa but made the decision to join the London club for a reported fee of £40 million. This poses the question: is this money well spent, or will the Tottenham curse strike again?
Gallagher has established a reputation as a tenacious, hard-working midfielder. Having averaged over three tackles and over two interceptions in just four La Liga starts this season, it is clear to see why he is a player in demand. He was given the nickname 'El Pitbull' in Spain, and it's hardly a surprise given that he was under the supervision of head coach Diego Simeone.
The Englishman, a regular presence in Atlético's European campaigns, etched his name into the record books by scoring the fastest Champions League goal ever by an English player, finding the net inside 30 seconds against Real Madrid in the Round of 16. His presence offers a fresh set of ideas for a Tottenham side that looked starved of them, even as their fanbase questioned his eagerness to join the club.
Not sure Conor Gallagher will pass the mental side of the medical because who in their right mind picks us over Villa at the moment?

Spurs have been hit with injury after injury so far this campaign , and the recent case of Rodrigo Bentancur suffering a hamstring injury leaves the side light in midfield. Gallagher is likely to be given the opportunity to prove his worth from the get-go, and a likely double pivot of Gallagher and Joao Palhinha will make for great viewing.
The 25-year-old will have his sights set on securing his place in the national team ahead of the tournament in June. Gallagher received a call-up for England in June last year for friendly matches against Andorra and Senegal. However, he is yet to cement his place in Thomas Tuchel's side, and perhaps part of his decision to move back to the Premier League was spurred by his World Cup aspirations. Tottenham has been far from their best this season, and this opens the door for players to come in and impress in the hopes of turning fortunes around at the club.
Transfer rivals Aston Villa are spoilt for options in the midfield department. Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans have formed a reliable partnership in the centre of the park, whilst Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley offer strong opposition as reinforcements. Gallagher would have known that he had a better chance of securing regular football in Thomas Frank's side, and it's safe to say that there is no love lost from the Villa faithful on social media.
Having weighed up the positives, it is only right that we look at the not-so-good side of this move as far as Tottenham is concerned. For a side that has a clear issue in its progression from possession in midfield to dangerous attacking scenarios, perhaps a midfielder with zero assists and one key pass in 19 La Liga matches isn't the ideal solution. For a £40 million price tag, it is reasonable to expect a bit more than "he put in a crunching challenge" every now and again.
Discipline and Tottenham are a duo that do not go hand in hand. The antics of Palhinha showcase a lot of built-up frustration in and around the club, whilst fans and players have had numerous altercations over the course of the season. It can't be said that Gallagher will be the answer to these disciplinary issues; he is no stranger to a yellow card or a scuffle on the pitch.
I think that the positives outweigh the negatives in this transfer move. Returning to England with a point to prove, eager to impress and make a case for the World Cup squad, Gallagher will need no more motivation to flourish in Tottenham colours. An energetic midfielder who will no doubt win the fans over with his attitude and determination to win, though it may take a bit longer than expected, having previously captained London rivals Chelsea. Whatever the case, we will be guaranteed box office entertainment when Chelsea and Tottenham clash at the end of the season.
