Champions Begin New Season In Perfect Style

The Champions got off to the perfect start in the opening match of the new Premier League season as Arsenal defeated Coventry City 3-0 at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners new signing Ezri Konsa was presented to the crowd prior to kick-off, whilst fellow new addition Bruno Guimaraes missed out due to a slight muscle injury. Coventry meanwhile saw last season’s midfield stars Jack Rudoni and Victor Torp begin play from the bench, with new signings Taiwo Awoniyi and Gustavo Hamer also amongst the substitutes.

Frank Lampard’s side took to action in the top flight of English football for the first time in 25 years on Friday night, but found themselves a goal down inside the first 15 minutes of the season as Kai Havertz swept home into the bottom corner with a first-time finish from a pass from Riccardo Calafiori to get the season for Arsenal and the Premier League as a whole up and running in fine fashion with a fine finish.

But things would soon go from bad to worse for Coventry and good to even better for Arsenal as just seven minutes following Haverz's opener as Arsenal’s new winger Christos Tzolis play a low ball across the box from the left hand side, Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only palm the ball into the path of Bukyao Saka who was left with a simple tap-in from close range and double Arsenal's advantage less than a third of the way through the contest.

Coventry would only see one sight at David Raya's goal during the first half, as a speculative overhead effort from the edge of the box from midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi which had the Arsenal goalkeeper briefly worried before hitting top of the goal above the crossbar.

But if the visitors went into the second half hopeful of potentially causing a major shock and getting themselves back into the game, any momentum gained from the interval was quickly blown away as Arsenal found a third goal just four minutes into the second period as Gunners captain Martin Ødegaard finished a fine Gunners move from close range which Rushworth failed to keep out. The Norwegian finishing off a flowing move that saw right-back Ben White overlap down the right hand side, the Englishman then cutting the ball back to his captain who's weak-footed finish found the net despite not being the cleanest of connections.

From there, the rest of the game became pretty plain-sailing for Arsenal, who were able to show off their strength in-depth with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka being rested just after the hour mark for Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke, with Piero Hincapie, Eberechi Eze and World Cup winner Mikel Merino also entering the action from the bench.

Tzolis saw a strike saved by Rushworth before coming off to a standing ovation from the Emirates Stadium, whilst Coventry saw their best chance of the match go begging in the latter stages as a free header from substitute Rudoni was straight at Raya for a comfortable save.

The final whistle soon brought the first match of the new Premier League season to a close, as Arsenal saw themselves get off to the best possible start to their title defence, whilst Coventry saw their first taste of Premier League football in two decades end in defeat.

Arsenal next head to Villa Park, whilst Coventry host fellow promoted side Hull City.

The Arsenal captain followed a starring display in Cardiff in the Community Shield with another similar performance vs Coventry, with Ødegaard at the heart of Arsenal's play creating more chances than any starting player and just like vs Manchester City at the Principality, put the cherry on top of the cake by scoring the third goal just minutes after the half-time break.
