Late Drama and First Half Chaos: Sunday's Round 24 Ligue 1 Action As It Happened

Paris FC 1-0 Nice

Paris Fc claimed a first win in seven games as they overcame Nice 1-0 in a tense clash in the capital.

Both sides find themselves near the bottom of the table and firmly in the fight against relegation, with the three points acting as a huge step towards potential safety for the home side.

A powerful left-footed strike from midfielder Marshall Munetsi proved the difference in the contest, as the Paris midfielder opened the scoring midway through the first half. Finding the top corner from the left side of the box to give his side the lead.

With an equaliser crucial, Nice pushed their hosts throughout the second half, with goalkeeper Kevin Trapp proving crucial to his side making a number of saves.

And in the end, despite a late red card in stoppage time from Thibault De Smet, Paris held on for victory to leapfrog their opponents to go 14th in the table and eight points away from danger.

Lille 1-0 Nantes

Just like Paris FC, Lille also saw themselves victorious 1-0 at home, but this particular encounter saw late drama as the hosts goal came in the 94th minute.

The contest saw little chances throughout for both teams, as Lille struggled to break down a stubborn Nantes backline.

However, as stoppage time ticked on and it looked certain like the match would end as a stalemate a Lille corner taken by former PSG and Borussia Dortmund defender Thomas Menuier was played towards defender Nathan Ngoy. The 22 year-old struck towards goal and his effort found the net to break Nantes hearts and spark wild scenes amongst the home fans.

Lille have a two-legged UEFA Europa League rematch with Aston Villa to look forward too, and will hope to qualify again for European football next season. With Ngoy’s late goal and the three points seeing them move up to fifth.

Lorient 2-2 Auxerre

Whilst Lille vs Nantes may have seen late drama, the drama at the clash between Lorient and Auxerre was all early.

An action-packed opening half hour saw four goals scored, two for each team. As both sides had to be forced to settle for a point as the second half failed to live up the the first in terms of goalmouth action.

The scoring got started straight away, as Auxerre took the lead against their hosts within the opening minute. Defender Marvin Senaya met a flick on following a corner just a minute into the contest to shock the home Lorient support and give his side a precious early advantage.

However, that advantage didn’t last as eighteen minutes following the opener, Lorient forward Bamba Dieng levelled the contest with a left footed strike.

But the game soon took another twist, as five minutes later Auxerre resumed their lead. Winger Josue Casimir finished a fast-flowing, counter attacking move to give his side the lead once more. However, again Auxerre saw themselves pegged back quickly. As another five minutes later Dieng grabbed his second of the match to once again equalise for Lorient.

The striker had only scored four Ligue 1 goals prior to today, but Lorient fans will be hoping his brace will lead to more goals in the latter stage of the season.

Despite the back-and-forth goals in the first half, the second half saw no goals scored as both teams earned a point each, a point which lifts Auxerre out the relegation places.

Metz 0-1 Brest

The third clash from Sunday's Ligue 1 action to finish with just the one goal, Brest triumphed away from home vs Metz against the odds.

Just 20 minutes into the clash, Brest were reduced to ten players thanks to a straight red card from left-back Daouda Guindo left Brest with a tough ask to try and claim a result.

However, Metz are bottom of the Ligue 1 table, and despite the player advantage couldn't make it count, missing multple chances before twenty minutes from added time, it would be the ten players of Brest who would take the lead. With striker Ludovic Ajorque opening the scoring with the away side with their first shot on target.

And that's how the game remained. Brest holding on for a crucial win that moves them into the top half, whilst Metz remain rooted to the foot of the league.

Marseille 3-2 Lyon

A late brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw Marseille victorious in a hugely entertaining clash at the Stade Velodrome.

The home side got off to the worst possible start, as Corentin Tolisso opened the scoring for Lyon inside the opening three minutes, and despite Marseille's pressure, the away side held onto their lead heading into the interval.

Following the break, Marseille would find their equaliser, with Brazilian winger Igor Paixao scoring his fifth Ligue 1 goal of the campaign to level the match. However, Lyon would respond, with fifteen minutes of normal time to play, Remi Himbert restored Lyon's advantage, and it looked like they would head for a famous win in France's second city.

But with 81 minutes on the clock, former Arsenal captain Aubameyang stepped up for his side, equalising the game at 2-2, before repeating the trick ten minutes later. As the Gabon star finished from being set up by on-loan Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri, to give Marseille an unlikely lead in the final minutes.

The home side held on to that lead, claiming three points in a thoroughly entertaining match, with Marseille claiming their first victory since Roberto De Zerbi's dismissal, a result which has them three points ahead of Lille in fourth place.
