Who will win the Euro 2024 Golden Boot?

22/06/24 13:26

With two games of the group stages having been played already, we’ve suggested some players that could go on to win the Golden Boot. These are players who look likely to progress further in the tournament, giving them a better chance at grabbing the top scorer award.

Euro 2024 top scorer predictions

Jamal Musiala

Jamal Musiala is the only player to have scored more than one goal in this tournament so as it currently stands when writing this, he is leading the charge. The Bayern Munich youngster will be a key starter for Germany and his 4.07 average successful take-on per 90 minutes will lead on to him finding the space to attempt to find the back of the net.

He scored 12 times across all competitions at club level last season and with Nagelsmann playing him as a winger for Germany’s first two games, Musiala looks to have confirmed his starting spot over Leroy Sané. The hosts are one of the favourites to win the tournament so you should expect more goals as the Euros progresses.

What are Musiala’s odds for winning Euro 2024 Golden Boot?

Kylian Mbappé

France captain Kylian Mbappé has established himself as one of the greatest players in the world over the last couple of years. He has just come of the back of an incredible season scoring 44 goals. His average goals per 90 in Ligue 1 last season was 1.13 and had an average of 2.46 shots on target. Mbappé will be the first name on that France team sheet every game given the quality he possesses.

He unfortunately suffered an injury in his first game of France’s Euro 2024 campaign, breaking his nose vs Austria. That subsequently placed on the bench vs the Netherlands, but the injury won’t rule him out of the tournament completely. If France do end up in the final then he has six games to become the Golden Boot winner, something he is more than capable of doing.

Harry Kane

England’s man up top Harry Kane opened up his Euros goal account in a 1-1 draw against Denmark. He had a season very similar to Mbappé, recording the same number of goals in 44 and his goals per 90 minutes was 1.14 and a 2.12 shot on target average. He has always had a great goalscoring record as his accolades prove. He is a three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner, 2018 World Cup Golden Boot winner and this season he won the Golden Boot in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.

As England’s record goalscorer, with 64 goals on the international stage, he will look to add a few more during this tournament. On paper with the quality of squad that England has, they should reach the final, potentially winning the Euros this year, and Harry Kane will be a massive part of that.

Álvaro Morata

Álvaro Morata has been Spain’s go to striker for the past eight years with this being his third Euros. He also scored in his first match of the tournament, part of a 3-0 win over Croatia. He might not have had the best season in comparison to some of the other candidates in this list but that’s not to say he didn’t have a good year. In all competitions he scored a total of 21 times.

After his goal in the Croatia match, he cemented his place as Spain’s fourth all time top goal scorer with 36 goals for his country. He also moved up to joint third for in the all time Euros goalscoring list with seven goals, sharing the place with Alan Shearer and Antoine Griezmann. Only Michel Platini in second and Cristiano Ronaldo at top spot have more goals at the European Championships with nine and 14 respectively. With that record, he’s likely to add to that this year and could win the Golden Boot, overtaking Platini in the process.

Romelu Lukaku

Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku was the top scorer in the qualifiers to this tournament. He had a tremendous output of 14 goals from eight games. During those qualifiers he averaged 2.13 goals per 90 minutes. On top of scoring 21 goals in all competitions on loan at Roma, he looks set to be in the running for the Golden Boot. Belgium did end up losing their first game of the Euros against Slovakia if Lukaku unfortunately have two goals disallowed, but I think they should go on to win their next two group games with Lukaku on the scoresheet at least once.

This will be his fifth major tournament with the Belgian squad scoring a total of 11 times on the big stage. At the age of 31, this will probably be his last international tournament so he will be eager to impress and try to bring his side to a title. Belgium have underperformed expectations for the last couple of major tournaments but Lukaku has always done well on an individual level so a Golden Boot win could be on the cards.

Cristiano Ronaldo

His name is known all around the world, he’s one of the best players to ever play football so it would be stupid to count out Portugal’s Cristano Ronaldo. He is the all time record goal scorer in this competition with 14 goals starting from his first Euros way back when in 2004.

In the Saudi Pro League this season he has scored 35 goals, with an extra nine goals coming in the King’s Cup and the AFC Champions League. Domestically, his average goals per 90 and shots on target are on the same level as Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane with 1.19 for goals and 2.45 for shots.

Ronaldo is still competing at such a high level despite being 39 years old. He still has his goalscoring ability and that isn’t going away anytime soon. Euro 2024 will be his last major tournament with Portugal so winning the whole tournament and getting the Golden Boot will be a nice tribute to a stellar international career. The Portuguese side have one of the best attacks this year and top assister in the qualifiers, Bruno Fernandes, will look to feed the ball into Ronaldo at every given opportunity. Ronaldo will score goals; the question is can he score better than everyone else and get back to back European Championship Golden Boots?
