Both sides will be mightily disappointed with how their opening games went last weekend, especially Montreal, who fell to a hefty 5-0 defeat at the hands of the imperious San Diego. Chicago Fire was also beaten, albeit more narrowly, in a 2-1 defeat to Houston away from home.
Coming into this one, both will be keen to show that they have more to offer and get their season up and running – meaning this will likely be a competitive encounter.
The two sides have ambitions much greater than their results last week showed and have squads capable of making the playoffs with a decent year under their belts. There isn't much to split them in terms of quality, and the tie could really swing either way on the day.
Chicago are understandably favourites, given their home advantage and the drubbing Montreal suffered last week, but a draw wouldn't be a result that shocks many in this one. The two sides have also drawn in two of their last five meetings in the MLS and have a fairly even head-to-head record, with Montreal edging the results.
Portland were last week involved in a cracker of a game which saw them eventually see off Columbus with an 88th-minute winner to make the score 3-2 on the night.
Colorado didn't manage to replicate the Portland result and fell to a 2-0 defeat away from home against a clinical Seattle Sounders side.
Although Colorado were unable to find the net, the Portland defence looked rather leaky and gave up chances which could well have seen Columbus score more than two on another night. Colorado will also be eager to get some offence going given the lacklustre creative display last week and could well open their account here.
Portland's forward line will be full of confidence, having scored those three goals last time out, and will be looking to continue that against a defence that will be lacking confidence and have already shown they can concede goals this season.
NY Red Bulls were able to prevail in an away victory over Orlando in a game that provided a mass of goalscoring opportunities and some ridiculous xG numbers compared to the scoreline.
New England faced a bit of a battering against Nashville, as the hosts put four past the Revolution and sent them home in rather humiliated fashion.
NY's aforementioned xG reached a whopping 4.64 courtesy of 22 shots and 13 on target. If that is to continue here, it could be a long day for an already glum-looking defence for New England.
Similarly, NY conceded an xG of 2.41 last time out, with Orlando unable to punish until the 96th minute. That will give New England hope that they can score a couple of goals despite being the away side.
Over 2.5 goals looks a really tasty option here given all of the statistics.
Minnesota found themselves embroiled in a massively entertaining tie last time out that ended in a 2-2 away from home against Austin FC, meaning that the selected over 2.5 goals hit in that fixture. They showed both attacking prowess and moments of defensive fragility throughout the game, most prominently shown through their 90th-minute equaliser.
Cincinnati comfortably dispatched of Atalanta United and were never really threatened in the game, before then knocking Q&M FC out of the CONCACAF Champions League courtesy of a 9-0 win in the second leg – that goalscoring form could well continue going forward, with their attack looking imperious this season.
Minnesota will be looking eagerly for their first three points here, which could leave them open to the Cincinnati forward line, and if the away side go behind, they will be desperate to preserve their perfect start to the season. The game could see goals flowing, and over 2.5 goals looks a solid option.
