Our Research

Goals To Flow With League Leaders

The Europa League may have a somewhat unlikely league leader at the moment, with underdogs FC Midtyjlland topping the pile in the league phase with a perfect record of 3 wins from the opening 3 games. Granted, this record is also shared with Lyon and SC Braga, but our Danish princes are the leaders thanks to a slightly better goal difference.

Led by Mike Tullberg in the dugout, Midtjylland have had a very strong start to their European campaign with solid wins over Maccabi Tel Aviv and Sturm Graz, and a shocking result against Premier League side Nottingham Forest wherein they won 3-2 on the road.

They now face a visit from a Celtic side posing many self-imposed questions this season. The Scottish giants have seen the resignation of Brendan Rogers prompt the return of Martin O'Neil, whilst sitting 9 points back from league-leading Hearts at home, and a pretty average 21st in Europe with a single win, draw and loss to their names from three.

Against Midtyjlland, the Scottish side are the favourites. On paper, they are a much better team than the Sturm Graz side and Tel Aviv side that the Danes kept clean sheets against, and will likely be able to find the net at least once. But Celtic have been leaky at the back all season, conceding 4 in three in Europe specifically, and Midtyjlland are full of confidence at the top of the table. Both teams should find joy in this bout.

Forest To Build Momentum

To lift the veil on this bet slightly, I am a Nottingham Forest fan myself, for my sins. Alas, I promise I won't let my bias come across too heavily in this bet.

Sturm Graz are among the weaker sides taking part in the Europa League this season. They were knocked into the competition after a Champions League playoff loss to Bodo/Glimt, and haven't really put that top-ranking heritage into fruition in the Europe's second-tier thus far, winning once against a Rangers side plagued with issues and losing to Midtyjlland and Celtic (funnily enough)

Forest's season has been a rollercoaster, to say the least, with The Reds already onto their 3rd permanent manager of the campaign with Sean Dyche, who took the reins from Ange Postecoglou just 39 days after he had taken them from Nuno Espirito Santo. He's made a decent start, with Forest putting on a masterclass to defeat favourites FC Porto in his first game, whilst losing to Bournemouth (obviously) and taking a solid point at home to Manchester United on the weekend.

The expectation is that the Forest team will be rotated on Thursday night, with a home battle with Leeds United on Sunday the likely priority. However, the travelling Reds should have enough quality in their second choices to take all three points from this clash for their second Europa League win of the campaign, as they look to promote some more stability and consistency through their results.

Villa To Bag Home Win

Obviously, this fixture has had plenty of political implications surrounding it weeks before kick-off, but we won't be diving into that anytime soon.

Bluntly, Maccabi have had a bad start to their European campaign this season. They did look good through the playoffs, with a win over Dynamo Kyiv securing their League Phase spot, but have since drawn once and lost two whilst only scoring a single goal and conceding 6. Their one point came against a PAOK side that sits firmly in mid-table, and did carry some merit with it, but a trip to Villa Park should be a test too far.

Aston Villa's shock loss to Go Ahead Eagles in their last European bout lifted many eyebrows around the continent, but they responded well with a big 1-0 win over giants Manchester City. They did then get outclassed by Liverpool in the next game, but they will be hoping to spur on another bounceback with a fixture they should be walking away from easily, no less with no away fans in attendance with their visitors.

Goals At Both Ends In Seville

Picking a BTTS line involving a team that hasn't conceded yet in the Europa League this season seems brave, but Real Betis are going to be the toughest opponent Lyon have faced so far in the Europa League.

The Ligue 1 side's involvement in this competition came mired in a mental off-field soap opera betwixt shareholder John Textor and English clubs Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, but they have made good on their involvement with three straight wins accompanied by a clean sheet in each.

Real Betis are also undefeated in Europe this season, but instead by way of one single win over Ludogorets and draws with Nottingham Forest and Belgian side Genk. They will be hoping to springboard their European campaign into life with this match, and have come into it with plenty of momentum by scoring 10 goals in their last two domestic games back in Spain.

The BTTS line has landed in 3 of Lyon's last five away games all season, whilst Betis' 6 home games in La Liga have seen 15 goals come home - 10 for them and 5 for any visitors, whilst they also shipped two goals at home to Forest to open their European season.

This will likely be an open-ended gutsy affair between a team looking to verify their standing in the upper areas of the League Phase against their first proper test, and another looking to put together some big wins to get out of the mid-table's clutches. Expect both to find the net - Lyon have to concede at some point, no?
