Football Park's Week of Betting | Brighton v West Ham | Bet Builder Top Picks & Selections

The festive period is upon us - games every three days, transfer rumours swirling once again, and for football fans, a non-stop drip-feed of information on their favourite game for an entire month.

A dream for fans, a nightmare for players, and an overall stressful time for clubs as a whole - that’s how I would sum up the Christmas period.

One of the weekend's most interesting fixtures sees Brighton play hosts to a struggling West Ham United side - both are recovering from recent defeats, West Ham from Liverpool at the weekend (this was written before their clash with United), and Brighton from a horror show of a comeback to Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

Brighton led 2-0, before being pegged back to level terms by an Ollie Watkins double on the stroke of halftime. They allowed their heads to drop and conceded another two goals in the second half to fall 4-2 down, and though Jan Paul van Hecke netted a late goal, it wasn’t enough. They will feel like it was three points dropped, three points they will be looking to avenge against the Hammers.

West Ham, currently lounging in 18th place, have looked far from convincing throughout the first third of the season, and though they have managed two wins in their last four, a poor performance against an out-of-form Liverpool raised familiar questions for Nuno Santo. Some points here would relieve significant pressure, as the men in claret and blue look to move out of the drop zone.

With so much on the line for both sides, it is only right for you to put something on the line too - tailored for both high-risk and low-risk, you can hand-pick your strategy from a list of Football Park’s best bets. So, without further ado, here are not one, but two of Football Park’s finest Brighton vs West Ham bet builders.

Why We Are Backing This Bet

Low Risk

Brighton Points: Though my recent history of backing heavy favourites works against me, West Ham have been completely abject for large parts of the campaign, and so I have no hesitations in backing Brighton to avoid defeat here. Whether it is a win or a draw remains to be seen - after their defeat to Villa, their confidence will certainly have taken a knock.

However, in their 16 games against the Hammers since 2017, the Seagulls have lost just once, and have won a further seven. History is certainly in their favour, and with our API giving a Brighton win or a draw an 80% likelihood, this one is a no-brainer.

Both Teams to Score: However, their poor results thus far this season don’t necessarily mean that West Ham are completely toothless in front of goal - in fact, they have scored nine of their 15 league goals in their last five matches, hitting a purple patch in front of goal.

Furthermore, three of the last four meetings between the two sides have seen both find the net, and with our API giving this leg a 76.7% chance of coming through, we think this is a sensible pick to increase your winnings.

Wilson On Song: Of the nine goals that West Ham have scored in their recent fixtures, Callum Wilson has scored three of them, including a classic brace against his old side Bournemouth.

Clearly the favoured Hammers striker over Germany’s Niklas Fullkrug, Wilson has looked sharper with each minute he has played, and now looks very much like the player Newcastle United signed for £20 million back in 2020. He may not score, but we’re pretty certain he will at least sting the palms of Bart Verbuggen.

High Risk

Brighton to Win: Starting off with what appears to be a pretty safe bet, our working is very much the same as for the Brighton double chance leg. With the head-to-head record, table position, and an API likelihood of 53.3%, there is very little in West Ham’s favour here.

Superior Seagulls: Less safe is the Brighton to Win both halves pick – having predicted West Ham to score in our safe bet, the Seagulls will need to score at least two in one half of football.

They certainly have the talent available to do this - Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, Danny Welbeck and Brajan Gruda all have unique skill sets capable of unpicking the West Ham defence at any given moment, and with the Hammers' lack of confidence and general struggle for form, once one goes in, plenty more could follow for Brighton.

Wicked Welbeck: Speaking of Danny Welbeck, the 35-year-old is having a stellar season to date, netting seven goals in 14 league games so far this season. Tipped for a surprise return to the England squad come the March international break, this game poses as the ideal opportunity to make his case for the international stage.

Moreover, Welbeck has scored six goals against the Hammers over the course of his career – this is his joint-highest figure against any Premier League club, along with Wolves and Chelsea.

Paqueta’s Poor Discipline: It’s become a weekly talking point surrounding Lucas Paqueta at this point - will he or won’t he pick up a card? At the centre of an investigation of a betting scandal, which accused him of deliberately picking up cards, the Brazilian was cleared of all wrongdoing in July. However, a naive second yellow in the game against Liverpool quickly saw the spotlight focus on him once again.

Having already picked up a yellow, Paqueta started to “chat” with the referee, and did so to such an extent that he was given his marching orders. It likely wasn’t deliberate, but it did underline the fact that the Brazilian has something of a hot-head attitude about him, one which will likely see him pick up a booking here.
