The Research

Low Risk: Manchester City have been the team to beat for years now. They've won every title there is to win, but look to have slowed down this season, trailing by 6 points to league leaders Arsenal. But in the last few weeks they've shown title-winning quality and boosted their side with the signings of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi. In the reverse fixture it was closer than the scoreline suggests but City's quality shone through at the end. With the fixture at home, Newcastle will struggle to get into the game; ultimately, City will come out on top.

Semenyo has really made an instact impact at City, scoring 4 goals in 5 and netting an assist. He seems to be the clubs new driving force. Him and Haaland have linked up well and both will have a shot on target this game. Haaland is inevitable; he's 43 shots on target in 23 Premier League games, meanwhile Semenyo has 31 in 23 from a wider position. These stats really shine on the amazing season these two are having and on the biggest stage in a cup semi-final, they'll be sure to be on form.

High Risk Our high-risk selection isn’t too dissimilar from the low-risk one. We still back City to win, with their experience in these situations. We've gone a bit more specific in the hopes of a big win. As we just spent the last few minutes saying, Semenyo is City's new danger man. He's at the heart of every attack, finds himself in the best positions and has arguably the scariest shot in English football. Scoring in the first leg twice, although one was ruled out. Semenyo will be on the scoresheet tonight and guiding City to Wembley.

This game has had some thrillers over the years. The one that springs to mind is City's 3-2 win away at St James Park in 2024 when Oscar Bobb netted that skillful winner in added time. Both teams have scored in 3 of the last 6 fixtures between the two sides and with Newcastle having to throw everything at it, it's hard to see how they won't create a few goal scoring opportunities. The Geordies picked up a draw at PSG last week and will be hoping to do one better at the Etihad. We could see goals galore in this one, especially City losing Guehi due to his registration not being done in time.

Let's move on to the midfield battles, shall we? Rodri returned to the City side at the start of the new year and has slotted right back in. He's found himself booked in three of his last 4 fixtures but has racked up 10 tackles in his last 5 games, not playing every minute in these. He just seems to find himself here, there and everywhere on the pitch, constantly winning those midfield battles. It'll be a tougher ask for him this time around with Tonali in the middle. The Italian is one of the world's very best but has a tendency to lose his head or commit a reckless foul. We will see these to battle it and with City's dominance Tonali may grow frustrated and leave one on his opposition. He's picked up 5 yellows in all competitions, and leaving it all out there tonight could lead to number 6.
