Holstein Kiel
After a stunning win over Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, Borussia Dortmund are just a point away from European football next season, and a win over already relegated Holstein Kiel on the final day could either seal Europa League, or even vault them into fourth place, qualifying them for Champions League football in 2025/26.
Their 4-2 victory away to Leverkusen sent a message to their rivals that der BVB are more than prepared to take part in Europe’s premier competitions next season, and coming off the back of a performance as good as that, they will also know that they cannot afford to slip up, with the home side virtually guaranteed a win here against a side who’s fate has already been sealed.
With all places between fourth and seventh all to play for, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This game will be broadcasted on Sky Sports +, with kick-off scheduled for 14:30 GMT on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund Predicted Lineup (3-4-2-1): Gregor Kobel (GK); Ramy Bensebaini, Waldemar Anton, Niklas Sule; Daniel Svensson, Felix Nmecha, Pascal Gross, Julian Ryerson; Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt; Serhou Guirassy.
Since finding themselves languishing in mid-table at the halfway stage of the season, Dortmund have shown a great strength of character to rescue their season and out them on the brink of Europe next year.
Superb showings in recent weeks from Guirassy, Adeyemi and Brandt have seen start to fully fire in front of goal, and with Kobel, Sule and Bensebaini finally starting to click at the back, it was inevitable that Dortmund were going to get out of first gear eventually.
However, the season is not over yet, and they need a win here to ensure they pile the pressure on fourth placed Freiburg, who lie one point above them, and face third placed Frankfurt on the final day. A Dortmund win and a Freiburg slip up would see Dortmund qualify for the Champions League, something that even three months ago many would have said was impossible.
Holstein Kiel Predicted Lineup (3-4-1-2): Thomas Dahne (GK); David Zec, Carl Johansson, Timo Becker; John Tolkin, Armin Gigovic, Magnus Knudsen, Lasse Rosenbloom; Steven Skrzybski; Shuto Machino, Alexander Bernhardsson.
Fair play to Holstein Kiel - they gave it a real go this season, and were so entertaining to watch. So often you see promoted sides adopt the strategy of sitting back and hitting on the counter-attack, something which is understandable, but nonetheless boring.
Not so with Kiel - they have tried to implement the strategy of Bundesliga’s most established side of playing out from the back and trying to dominate possession. Their goal total is far superior to other sides in and around the bottom three, but such an approach comes with great risk, hence their woeful defensive record.
While they will be returning to the second division next season, they certainly showed football fans that they are a side to keep an eye on, and if they can bring in some more experienced player’s ready to adapt to their strategy, it will pay off in the long run.
Recent Meetings:
With Dortmund chasing elite European competition next season, while Kiel have nothing left to play for except pride, this prediction is elementary. Dortmund will dominate from first kick to last, and will lead at both half time and full time.
Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Holstein Kiel.
With a full strength team out, it will be a feast of attacking football for Dortmund, and a win here will be a fine way to cap off a remarkable turnaround in their season.
