We are one matchday into the 2025 Gold Cup, and we head back to Group A, where Costa Rica takes on Dominican Republic and a win for the mainland Central American side would grant them a ticket into the quarter finals.
Group A consists of Costa Rica, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Suriname. Lots of goals were scored in the first matches, with Costa Rica defeating Suriname in a seven-goal thriller 4-3, while Dominican Republic fell short in a tight affair with Mexico 3-2.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This clash between Costa Rica and Dominican Republic will take place at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington, on Thursday, June 19, at 00:00 BST. This match will be available to watch on Premier Sports.
This match will be on TV in the UK, live on Premier Sports for a 00:00 BST kick-off time, on Thursday, June 19.
Costa Rica Predicted Lineup (5-3-2): Navas; J. Mora, Calvo, Faerron, Mitchell, C. Mora; Aguilera, Galo, Bran; Ugalde, Martinez.
Substitute in the opener, Warren Madrigal, might be a doubt for Thursday following an injury shortly after he came off the bench.
Costa Rica are considered a top team in the region, and in terms of their recent form in competitive matches, they are unbeaten since their Nations League finals against Panama in November. They defeated Belize to qualify for the tournament 13-1 on aggregate and comfortably sealed a spot in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying before defeating Suriname 4-3 in the first of three matches in this group.
It was an extremely late victory for Costa Rica to defeat Suriname, with Ugalde scoring two penalties including one in the 13th minute of second half injury time. We can probably expect another scrappy affair on Thursday but with both strikers on the scoresheet for the tournament, it will give them a good boost in morale heading into the rest of the cup.
Dominican Republic Predicted Lineup (5-4-1): Valdez; Dollenmayer, Pujol, Rosario, Kaparos, Urbaez; Azcona, Lopez, Morschel, Gonzalez; Romero.
After achieving promotion to League A of the Nations League following a perfect record in their group, Dominican Republic suffered a poor end to the second round in World Cup Qualifying to finish in third and so will miss out on qualification to the 2026 World Cup. They suffered a close 3-2 defeat to Mexico in which all five goals were scored within 23 in-game minutes of each other, with Mexico just coming out on top.
Dominican will be hoping that Dorny Romero can find his scoring form that resulted in 10 goals for the forward during their unbeaten Nations League campaign.
Surprisingly, these sides have never faced each other before. This will be their first meeting in history.
Costa Rica are the better team and certainly head into his game in better form and will be eager to lock in their top eight spot as soon as possible.
