Boca Juniors Predicted Lineup (4-3-1-2): Marchesin; Blanco, Rojo, Battaglia, Blondel; Delgado, Belmonte, Zenon; Palacios: Cavani, Merentiel.
Boca finished the season in 3rd place after a very up and down season which saw appoint Miguel Angel Russo for his third stint in charge of the Buenos Aires side. Despite securing qualification for next years Copa Libertadores, they did not end the season how they would have hoped. They ended their regular season with a 2-0 victory over Estudiantes, a 2-1 loss to arch-rivals River Plate and a 1-1 draw with Tigre. In the Apertura play-offs, they defeated Linus on penalties before falling to Independiente 1-0, losing in the quarterfinals.
35-year-old Marcos Rojo and 38-year-old Edinson Cavani will bring heaps of experience to the Argentine outfit. Despite his age, Cavani is still finding output, registering two assists and a goal in the last six matches, which he will hope to continue from Monday.
Benfica Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Trubin; Araujo, Silva, Otamendi, Dahl; Florentino, Aursnes; Di Maria, Kokcu, Akturkoglu; Pavlidis.
Since their Champions League exit to Barcelona, Benfica managed to go on an incredible unbeaten run, narrowly missing out on the league title to fellow Lisbon occupants, Sporting CP. Just a week on from this, they fell short once more against Sporting, losing 3-1 in extra time, after Viktor Gyokeres scored a late penalty. They come into this match as heavy favourites to win, and to finish second in the group, where their path would lead them to playing the victors in Group D, a group which Chelsea are favoured to win.
Greek international Vangelis Pavlidis had an impressive campaign, scoring 19 goals in 27 starts. Turkish forward Akturkoglu also comes in on impressive form, scoring 11 times in the Portuguese first division. Both players also netted for their countries on the recent international break, so will be confident heading into their opener.
Monday evening will be the first time these sides lock horns, having operated in different continents and leagues, not meeting before in this competition either.
Benfica come into this game in very good form and will use their disappointing standings in both the league and cup competitions as fuel to steamroll into the round of 16. They are favourites to beat an inconsistent Boca side who have struggled recently to find the net.
