Tuesday sees the final gameweek of the Copa Libertadores group stage, after which the 16 progressing teams will be confirmed.
Sao Paulo know they have already qualified for the knockout stage, and will be playing this game to send a statement out to their fellow competitors, while their opponents Talleres are playing for pride, with their four point deficit to second place too much to overturn in their one remaining games.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Sao Paulo Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Rafael (GK); Enzo Diaz, Alan Franco, Ruan Tressoldi, Cedric Soares; Marcos Antonio, Pablo Maia; Ferreira, Oscar, Lucas Ferrreira; Andre.
Three time champions of the Copa Libertadores, Sao Paulo’s advance into the knockout stages was very much a formality - the last time they failed to finish in the top two of their group was back in 2020, and since then, they have finished top of their group in two of the three editions they have competed in.
While they are underperforming in the Brazilian Serie A, sitting 13th in the league after 10 games, their Libertadores campaign has been smooth sailing, and with one game to go, they have already sealed qualification and the extra bonus of top spot barring a disaster on the final matchday.
With a talented squad, which includes the likes of former Southampton right back Cedric Soares and ex-Chelsea maestro Oscar, Sao Paulo have the ability to make a deep run at the competition, but must start to perform in the league in order to give them a better platform in the cup.
Talleres Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Javier Burrai (GK); Miguel Navarro, Juan Portillo, Santiago Fernandez, Augusto Schott; Juan Portilla, Matias Galarza; Rick, Ruben Botta, Valentin Depietri; Federico Girotti.
While they have never won the Copa Libertadores, Talleres are still a formidable unit more than capable of shock. Runners up in the Liga Professional last season, and the two previous campaigns, there was hope that the Argentine’s would at least be able to match their best showing, a quarterfinal qualification in 2022.
However, with their first three matches all ending in defeat, their hopes were over before they found form, and their draw on matchday four against Libertad ended their hopes, with third place the highest finish they can muster.
However, should they secure third place ahead of Allianz Lima, who sit level on points, then they will qualify for the final stage of the Copa Sudamericana, meaning they will still be competing on the cup front as the season goes on.
Recent Meetings:
With Talleres starting to finally find some form, this promises to be far from straightforward for Sao Paulo. However, they are the better team both on paper and on recent form, and while they are struggling in the league, they come alive in this competition.
That is why our experts have decided that the best tip for this fixture is Sao Paulo to win. Odds of 1.79 on Highbet mean that a £10 bet would return almost £18 should the bet win.
Sao Paulo 1-0 Talleres
It won’t be a goal fest, and could be quite cagey from Talleres due to future continental football being on the line, but Sao Paulo will get the job done. Talleres will be praying the Allianz Lima lose in order to book their place in the Copa Sudamericana.
