England’s fourth tier is known for being a hotly competitive division, with most competing teams very similar in their quality of player and manager. This brings an element of unpredictability - evenly matched sides often play out two completely different games during the regular season, with results typically significantly varying from the first fixture.
Upsets are more frequent as a result - with less of a gap between League One and League two than between League One and the Championship, new sides can enter the division and immediately start picking up positive results against the established, high quality sides - this means that backing the underdog is more sensible than in the Premier League, where smaller sides are often outclassed by the big teams.
League Two also gains less public attention, which can mean that some bookies price markets concerning the league inaccurately. This means that for bettors who do their research, and know what to look for, there is some serious value lying in one or two markets.
League Two has a cast of 24 teams, with four relegated from League One the previous season, and two promoted from the National League - these six teams join up with the 18 who could not escape the division to form the new league table for the new season.
The top three spots act as automatic promotion places - sides who finish here go up to the Championship without needing to undergo the stress of a play-off, while fourth to seventh place go into the play-offs, with the winner accompanying the three automatic promotee’s into the second tier.
Meanwhile, the bottom two spots in the league are relegation spots. At the end of the season, the bottom two sides are relegated down to the National League.
League Two takes place over 46 games weeks, but unlike the Premier League, lower divisions do not put proceedings on hold for the international breaks. This means that while top leagues take breaks in September, October, November and March for international football, League Two is still going full steam ahead. Effectively, the league functions non-stop from August to May.
League Two football can be aired on a variety of platforms - Sky Sports tends to show the bigger games, such as promotion battles, relegation clashes and play-off games, while club platforms show their own games for a small sign up price.
Other channels, such as ITV and streaming platform Youtube show comprehensive highlights at the end of each gameweek.
Given that sides who win the title automatically move up to the league above, there is no room for title defences, and typically, when former champions are relegated back to League Two, it takes a few attempts for them to find their feet again before mounting another promotion charge. Even then, there is a chance they get promoted through the play-offs or via second place than by winning the title.
Chesterfield and Doncaster Rovers hold the most League Two titles with four apiece, while Brentford, Notts County and Swindon Town all have three to their name.
