While Tottenham’s league campaign no longer holds any importance with the Europa League final slowly growing on the horizon, the same cannot be said for home side Aston Villa as they host Ange Postecoglou’s side on Friday.
The Villains need to win their last two games to give themselves the best chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season. They currently sit sixth, just outside the qualification spots, and are relying on one of Chelsea, Man City or Newcastle to drop points, or else on a ridiculous goal difference swing.
For Spurs, their remaining league fixture pose simply as warm up games, as they look to win the Europa League to put a silverware coloured glint on an otherwise dire season.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This game will be broadcasted on Sky Sports Premier League, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30.
Aston Villa Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Emi Martinez (GK); Lucas Digne, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Matty Cash; Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara; Morgan Rodgers, Marco Asensio, Leon Bailey; Ollie Watkins.
Villa’s narrow victory over Bournemouth last weekend was as gutsy as they come, and truly underlined their credentials as Champions League contenders. With struggling United and Spurs their last two opponents of the season, there is a serious possibility they take maximum points from those fixtures, leaving them on 69 points and praying that at least one of their rivals tastes defeat in their remaining games.
They will be without Jacob Ramsey for this fixture, saw red 10 minutes from time at the Vitality Stadium, but thanks to clever investment in January, they now have Marco Asensio, who can play anywhere across the attacking midfield, as well as a host of talented wingers to plug the gap.
Villa are favourites here, and for good reason. To go with their superb recent form going up against Tottenham’s relegation form, Villa also beat them in their most recent fixture in the FA Cup fourth round in February, a game in which they walked all over them. Villa will be hoping for a repeat performance, especially in front of their own fans.
Tottenham Hotspur Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Guglielmo Vicario (GK); Djed Spence, Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Pedro Porro; Pape Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, Archie Gray; Mathys Tel, Dominic Solanke, Heung-Min Son.
Though their last two league games now mean nothing, Postecoglou will still want to coax some form of positivity into the club atmosphere, both on and off the pitch. 2025 has been the hardest year for Spurs fans in recent memory, and there have been more than a few.
They have only beaten Southampton, Man United, Ipswich and Brentford in 2025, with the Bees placing highest in terms of position, as they currently sit eighth. Playing sixth placed Villa who have something to play for will be a different challenge altogether.
However, this game also lends an opportunity for Postecoglou to trial some new tactics and systems, making it something of a rehearsal for the Europa League final. In clashing with United, they are playing a side having a virtually identical season to them, and they need something new to differentiate themselves from their opponents. New will catch them off guard, so look perhaps for a formation or unusual personnel change here.
Recent Meetings:
With Spurs highly likely to experiment and rotate the team ahead of this one, Villa will be handed the closest thing to a free win here. Even at their strongest, Spurs have rarely challenged any of the top six this season.
With a rotated squad, they don’t have a chance, so Villa should emerge as comfortable victors.
Aston Villa 3-1 Tottenham Hotspur
In their fine vein of form, Villa should make short work of the Premier League’s worst London club, and will move themselves to potentially within three points of successive seasons in the Champions League.
