It is semi-final time in the Under-21 European Championships, as England take on the Netherlands for a chance at final glory. The game will be played on Wednesday evening at the Štadión Tehelné pole in Slovakia.
England are the current reigning champions of the Euros U21 and if they keep up their strong performances, they may be staring down the barrel of more success. Lee Carsley’s men have had a phenomenal- but not perfect- campaign so far in the competition, only losing one group stage match and progressing through to the semi-finals with flying colours. They bounced straight back from their defeat to Germany U21 by taking down 2023 finalists Spain on Saturday, thanks to goals from James McAtee, Harvey Elliott and Elliot Anderson. However, with Germany on the other side of the semi-final draw, a potential final lined up with them could haunt the Three Lions with past nightmares.
Netherlands have had a similar journey to England so far in the Euros U21. Both sides picked up the same number of points in the group stages with four, as they also both finished second in their respective groups. Netherlands’ loss fell to the hands of Denmark in their second match, but fortunately Michael Reiziger’s outfit were able to qualify for the knockouts in their very last group match against Ukraine. This led them onto their quarterfinal clash against Portugal, where the Oranjes were able to claim a late 1-0 win – Ernest Poku with the goal. However during this game, Netherlands winger Ruben van Bommel received a red card, which could prove costly for them in the semi-final.
England U21 Predicted Line-Up: Beadle, Hinshelwood, Quansah, Cresswell, Livramento, Morton, Scott, Hutchinson, McAtee, Elliott, Stansfield
Harvey Elliot has been superb for his side in the Euros U21 so far. The Liverpool youngster has netted two goals for England U21 in the competition, as well as grabbing an assist from the right flank. Elliott was also the man to bury England’s second goal against Spain on Saturday.
Netherlands U21 Predicted Line-Up: Roefs, Maatsen, Hato, van den Berg, Rensch, Taylor, Valente, Flamingo, Poku, van Bergen, Manhoef
Ian Maatsen has really shown his renowned quality in this competition so far. The full-back has helped Netherlands U21 onto back-to-back clean sheets in their last two matches, as well as an assist against Portugal in the semi-final. Growing up through the English ranks, Maatsen will be sharing the stage with some familiar faces on Wednesday.
This matchup is one that features many draws. On record, the two have played each other four times, consisting of a staggering three draws. The only win came in the way of The Netherlands almost six years ago. The last four meetings between these sides are as follows:
Whilst The Netherlands displayed a strong performance against Portugal last round, England’s emphatic 3-1 victory over Spain must be applauded. Lee Carsley’s men played some fantastic football which was rewarded with the three goals that they scored.
