Major League Soccer has reached the halfway stage of the season, and this weekend’s action sees Real Salt Lake of the Western Conference take on DC United of the Eastern Conference. Neither side are in a playoff spot and both risk slipping further away from the postseason places if they are to lose this game. This match kicks off at 2:30 am (BST) at the America First Field, Utah.
After four straight seasons of making the playoffs, 2025 might finally be the year RSL miss out. They have three losses and one draw in their last four games, handing LA Galaxy their first and only win of the season last time out. Sitting 13th in the Western Conference and seven points outside the playoffs, it's not looking good.
Predicted Line Up: Cabral, Caliskan, Glad, Vera, Katranis, Ruis, Ojeda, Marczuk, Gozo, Russell, Agada
Diego Luna would without a doubt be RSL’s player to watch in this tie, but he is away representing the USA on international duty. Johnny Russell could be a fun winger to take his place. The Scotsman was one of the best wingers in the MLS a few years ago and joined RSL in April for free, but is yet to score or start.
Defensively poor and now without Christian Benteke, DC United approach this game with one win, two losses, and a draw in their last four. Their win against Cincinnati is their only win across their last seven game, and was a shock result. With Salt Lake losing to the LA Galaxy though, DC will believe they can win this.
Predicted Line Up: Barraza, Antley, Bartlett, Tubbs, Schnegg, Zouhir, Servania, Stroud, Kijma, Pirani, Murrell
Both teams will be missing their main man in this match, with Christian Benteke a miss for DC. Former Santos wonderkid Gabriel Pirani is yet to show his true potential in the country’s capital, but stepped up to score a screamer in their last win against Cincinnati. If DC are to win, then Pirani will have had a part to play.
Two of the teams with the most history in the MLS, DC United and Real Salt Lake, have met 24 times, with their meetings becoming less frequent as the league has grown larger. RSL have 10 wins, DC have eight, and there have been six draws. Their last five meetings are as follows:
A clash of two teams that are desperate for a turning point in their respective seasons. Both are missing their best players, so the tie is a free-for-all. For this reason, our betting experts say Both Teams to Score is the best value tip for this game. With odds at 1.72, a bet of £10 could see a potential return of up to £17.20.
(odds subject to change)
Real Salt Lake 1-1 DC United A poor display from two teams lacking confidence in front of goal.
