Saturday’s MLS action sees third placed Nashville look to threaten the top of the Eastern table as they host sixth-placed New York City, who sit three points behind them.
Nashville have undergone a superb turnaround since a poor start to the season, and eight consecutive games without defeat have seen them shoot up the table, where they now lie just three points back from leaders Philadelphia Union.
For New York, a turnaround is still needed. They haven’t managed to string more than two wins together since the start of the season, but a win here would take their current streak to three, and potentially set them up for an assault on the top spots.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This game will be broadcasted on Apple TV, with kick-off scheduled for 21:30 GMT on Saturday.
SC Nashville Predicted Lineup (4-4-2): Joe Willis (GK); Daniel Lovitz, Jack Maher, Jeisson Palacios, Andy Najar; Alex Muyl, Edvard Tagseth, Patrick Yazbek, Jacob Shaffelburg; Sam Surridge, Hany Mukhtar.
Amazingly, losing three of their first six games of the season turns out to have been a positive for Nashville. It meant they could address their mistakes early, and get a head start on what they needed to improve ahead of many of their rivals.
As a result of the identification of their weaknesses, Nashville have turned into a formidable outfit, winning six of their last eight in all competitions, and sitting third place in the Eastern section, three points off leaders Philadelphia Union.
This is made even more impressive when it is considered that the home side finished 13th of 15 teams last campaign, languishing 38 points behind Inter Miami. With renewed vigor and the advantage of learning from their mistakes, Nashville could be a force to be reckoned with this season.
New York City FC Predicted Lineup (4-3-3): Matt Freese (GK); Birk Risa, Thiago Martins, Justin Haak, Tayvon Gray; Maxi Moralez, Jonathan Shore, Aiden O’Neill; Hannes Wolf, Alonso Martinez, Julian Fernandez.
Though New York have been solid so far, there has been no obvious sign of improvement from last season. They currently sit sixth (the same place they finished last campaign), and are the lowest scoring top team in the top nine with just 18.
However, at the back they have been excellent, conceding just 15 goals - only 10th placed New England have conceded fewer (13). Their backline has been central to their progress, and in facing a Nashville side which ranks third in the league for goals scored, it will provide an excellent litmus test of whether they can compete with the top sides.
Looking for three wins on the bounce, the away side are certainly up against it, but if they can bring the level they have shown in their last two games, victories over New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire, then they will be difficult for Nashville to bypass.
Recent Meetings:
Though New York appear to be finding their stride, Nashville are the team in form, and comfortable favourites to take all three points.
That is why our experts have decided that the best tip for this fixture is to back Nashville to win. With odds of 1.96 on Highbet, a £10 bet would return almost £20 should the bet be successful.
SC Nashville 2-1 New York City
Though New York have an impeccable defensive record, Nashville have plenty of weapons in attack and will eventually prove too much for the visitors, likely netting a late goal to win it.
