The eighteenth match-week of the MLS season brings us St. Louis City vs LA Galaxy. This Saturday evening kick-off features the two lowest sides in the Western division, as it is 14th versus 15th. The match will be played in St. Louis at the Energizer Park, with both sides looking to climb the table.
St. Louis City have had a pretty poor run in the MLS so far this season. They currently sit second from bottom in the Western side of the MLS on just fourteen points, after only winning three matches all season. Whilst this is similar territory to last season, City will certainly be looking to improve on the minimal progress they have made, as a Championship Playoff place is still a possibility. However, their form has been very disappointing. David Critchley’s men have only won one game in the MLS in almost three months, which came at home to San Jose less than two weeks ago. But just as they thought their fortunes may have changed, City have stumbled over yet another hurdle, as they suffered defeat to Portland in their most recent game. The score was 2-1 on the night, as David Ayala found the winner for Portland in the 92nd minute of the match.
What has happened to LA Galaxy? An MLS giant who only last season finished second by one goal, now sit rock bottom in the MLS Western after only winning one match all season. Galaxy have only picked up an underwhelming seven points since the season started in February, and they do not look anywhere near securing a Championship Playoff spot. Ironically, their only win came in their last match at home to Salt Lake, after their 2-0 lead grabbed all three points. However, prior to this fixture, Greg Vanney’s outfit had not picked up a single win in over three months of football. Galaxy’s torrid form has also led them onto losing the most games in the entire MLS so far this season with 12, and they have also conceded the most goals as well with 36. Meanwhile, they have only scored 15 goals to redeem their poor efforts, which has handed them the worst goal difference in the MLS.
St. Louis City Predicted Line-Up: Bürki, Totland, Kessler, Baumgartl, Reid, Morales, Becher, Watts, Hartel, Klauss, Pompeu
Marcel Hartel has been one of St. Louis City’s strongest players this season. After growing up through the Bundesliga ranks, the winger has now bagged five goals and five assists in the MLS since signing last summer. Despite only two of those goals coming this season, Hartel has displayed his quality in the struggling St. Louis side.
LA Galaxy Predicted Line-Up: Micovic, Nelson, Yoshida, Zanka, Yamane, Cerrillo, Sanabria, Paintsil, Fagundez, Pec, Nascimento
Unfortunately for Galaxy, they are having to grind out results without their star-man Marco Reus. The German suffered a thigh injury in late May and is now set to be out until the end of June, after already collecting three goals and three assists this season.
However, it is not all bad news, as Diego Fagundez has stepped into his position well. The Uruguayan has also picked up three goals in the MLS this season and played a huge part in Galaxy’s latest win against Salt Lake. The midfielder has racked up nearly 15 years' worth of experience in the MLS – the exact portfolio of player you want when enduring a troubled season.
LA Galaxy have never beaten St. Louis City. Since City’s first match in the MLS in 2023, the two sides have played each other five times, with the newcomers winning two of them. For a matter of fact, both of these wins were the last two fixtures between these teams, as St. Louis found a 3-0 win back in March and a 2-1 win back in September. The only five meetings between these sides are as follows:
Both teams are in an extremely rough patch of form and need to get themselves out of it. LA Galaxy won their last game and will be desperate to extend on this first win of the season.
