After an exciting summer break, the Premier League is back! Here, we have the first lunchtime kick-off of the 2025/26 season, where Newcastle United travel to Birmingham to take on Aston Villa. With the apparent loss of Alexander Isak, we will get to see if that affects the Magpies on the pitch, or if they have enough for an opening day win.
Key Betting Tip: Aston Villa to Win 2.1 odds on Kwiff represents excellent value based on the tip provided by our team of in-house tipsters.
Aston Villa Predicted XI: Marco Bizot; Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres, Ian Maatsen; Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans; Leon Bailey, Morgan Rogers, Jacob Ramsey; Ollie Watkins.
Newcastle Predicted XI: Nick Pope; Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Sven Botman, Tino Livramento; Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton; Anthony Gordon, Anthony Elanga, Harvey Barnes.
Unai Emery nearly has a full-strength side for this Saturday’s clash. Just one major change in the XI sees Bizot start between the sticks, with Emiliano Martinez currently suspended. Rogers currently has an ankle problem and may struggle in the race against time to be fit, but it is possible he wins it.
As for Eddie Howe’s side, with Isak seemingly on the move and not willing to wear the Newcastle shirt again, summer signing Elanga will look to impress on his first start. Gordon could be a doubt through an ankle issue, but he may be fit in time. Joe Wiloock, however, will miss out through an ankle injury.
Villa impressed last season, but will be without star loans such as Marco Asensio or Marcus Rashford. They finished last season in sixth place, missing out on Champions League football on goal difference to Saturday's visitors. Emery signed two new players over the summer, with Bizot joining from Brest (£2.9m) and Evann Guessand coming in from OGC Nice (£25m).
Newcastle, meanwhile, will be returning to the Champions League after missing out on European football altogether last year. They have been rather busy in the window, signing Antonio Cordero (Malaga – Free), Elanga (Forest – £37m), Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton – Loan), and Malick Thiaw (Milan – £30m).
This fixture has given us absolute thrillers in the past, so we expect this Saturday to give us even more. Newcastle have won three of the last four meetings, and since 2010, these sides have met 27 times, with Newcastle winning 12, to Villa’s six. The last five games have featured an astonishing 24 goals.
Recent Head-to-Head Results:
The last meeting came in April, where the Villains came out on top 4-1. It took just 33 seconds for Watkins to open the scoring, with Schär cancelling it out not long after. Villa then scored three goals within 11 second half minutes, as Maatsen, Burn (OG), and Onana all got on the scoresheet.
Aston Villa Last 5 Matches:
It has been a positive end to the pre-season preparation for Villa, and they will be eager to get off to an excellent start at their home ground on Saturday. They failed to score two goals just once in the last five games, and have kept two clean sheets, so they are currently firing up front and defending solidly as well.
Newcastle Last 5 Matches:
Out of Newcastle’s six pre-season games, they lost four, and drew the other two. Furthermore, they are missing Isak big time, having only scored five. On the other hand, they have also conceded 13 goals, displaying issues at both ends of the pitch.
Our advanced algorithm analyses over 200 data points to generate these predictions with confidence in an Aston Villa victory. The model factors in current form, head-to-head records, player availability, and tactical matchups. The recent defensive issues for Newcastle and Villa’s fiery form on goal suggest Emery’s side could come away with all three on Saturday. With a home crowd behind them, the players will be fired up to give supporters a day to remember.
Football Park’s Best Bet: Aston Villa to Win @ 2.1 - Our team of in-house betting tipsters have predicted a huge Villa win in this fixture. Recent form suggest confidence in an Aston Villa victory.
Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa): With no Rashford or Asensio, Watkins looks likely to get more minutes this campaign, and he possesses a scarily impressive record against the Tyneside outfit. With five goals and three assists to his name in the last six meetings, he will certainly be eager to impress and exploit the Magpies defence early on.
Bruno Guimarães (Newcastle): The 27-year-old will be pivotal in helping to ensure Villa do not get many looks in the final third. The Brazilian is one of the best midfielders in the league, and last season proved it. When compared with similar players, he ranks highly in goals, assists, successful dribbles, touches, fouls won, duels won, and possession won in final third, just showing what an all-round class player he is.
Referee: Craig Pawson. The regular, seasoned Premier League referee has become accustomed to officiating the big clashes. He hands out an average of 3.4 yellow cards per match, and will need to be able to take control of the game early on Saturday, as it is set to be a spicy affair.
