Scottish League Cup action brings us Inverness CT vs St Johnstone this weekend, as the two Group F teams battle it out for three important points in game-week two.
Group F is all to play for at the minute, with every team barring fifth spot on three points. This includes both of Saturday’s attendees, as St. Johnstone sit in second place on goal scored, whereas Inverness CT occupy third with the same number of points.
Key Betting Tip: St. Johnstone to Win offers good value @ 1.30.
Inverness CT Predicted XI: Munro, Millen, Savage, Devine, Allan, McKay, Wetherspoon, Longstaff, MacLeod, Strachan, Chalmers
St. Johnstone Predicted XI: Steward, Diabate, Svedberg, Griffith, Stanton, Kirk, Baird, Franczak, Steven, Bright, Mallan
St. Johnstone gave an unnamed trialist 90 minuted in their last game against Dundee United. That player has now been signed on as former Salford City man Stevie Mallan, as he also becomes likely to feature again on Saturday.
Both of these sides are level on three points on the League Cup Group F, after each of them won their opening game of the tournament.
Inverness played Scottish League Two outfit Elgin City in their first match, winning 2-0 on the night thanks to goals from Billy McKay and Luis Longstaff. This puts them third in the table, although every other team in the group - apart from Saturday’s opponents – have each played an extra game.
St. Johnstone also battled it out with a League Two side in their first match, beating East Kilbride 3-1 away from home last weekend. St. Johnstone conceded early on in that game but then turned it around through three second half goals. They now occupy second place in Group F, level with top spot and with a game in hand – well on their way to securing a place in the next stage.
St. Johnstone have near enough always gotten the better of Inverness. Despite Inverness now being in League Two, they were only recently contesting St. Johnstone in the Premiership. Although even then, the latter would often bring home the three points.
Recent Head-to-Head Results:
St. Johnstone have won four out of the last five games from this matchup, scoring a whopping 13 goals in the process. However, all of these fixtures come from many years back.
Both of these teams have had the perfect start in the Scottish League Cup. However, in this fixture in particular, St. Johnstone are by far the favourites given their one-league gap over Inverness. Furthermore, their head-to-head statistics against Inverness are outstanding from the most recent fixtures.
With this in mind, a 2-0 win to St. Johnstone looks to be a reasonable prediction for this match.
Football Park’s Best Bet: St. Johnstone to Win @ 1.30 (Highbet).
(Odds are subject to change)
MacKenzie Kirk - Kirk was one of St. Johnstone’s very few shining lights throughout their relegation campaign last term, scoring eight goals and grabbing one assist in the Scottish Premiership. The 21-year-old was also on target in their last League Cup match against East Kilbride, scoring the third goal of the afternoon.
Billy McKay - McKay is Inverness’ Mr. Reliable. Now turned 36, the striker bagged six goals and four assists in the Scottish League One last season and has now followed that up with a goal in his most recent match against Elgin City in the League Cup.
