Match Details: July 19th, 2025 | Ochilview Park, Falkirk | Scottish League Cup Group Stage
Motherwell know that safe passage through to the knockout stages of the Scottish League Cup awaits them if they can pick up a 90 minute victory of Stenhousemuir in Group G.
The Scottish Premiership side are undefeated in their two games in the competition so far, beating Peterhead last time out after a penalty shootout win over Clyde after a 2-2 draw in the first fixture. Stenhousemuir have lost their only game so far, a humbling 3-0 defeat at the hands of Greenock Morton.
Key Betting Tip: Motherwell to Win both halves, at odds of 3.18, represent excellent value for the tip provided by our in-house tipsters.
Stenhousemuir Predicted XI (5-2-3): Darren Jamieson (GK); Oliver Simpson, Kinlay Bilham, Archie Graham, Gregor Buchanan, Ross Meechan; Scott McGill, Michael Anderson; Matt Aitken, Corey O’Donnell, Ross Taylor.
After a strong 2024/25 season which saw them qualify for the League One promotion play-offs, falling short at the very last hurdle, Stenhousemuir come into the new season brimming with confidence, full of belief that they are able to compete with sides divisions above them.
This mindset is particularly useful in the League Cup - League One sides are placed in a group alongside another League One side, one League Two side, one Championship side, and of course a Premiership side, with this being Motherwell. Their squad needs that giant killing mindset, the same one they will be using to fuel their promotion battle.
Motherwell Predicted XI (4-3-1-2): Matty Connelly (GK); Emmanuel Longelo, Johnny Koutroumbis, Liam Gordon, Paul McGinn; Tom Sparrow, Lennon Miller, Callum Slattery; Lukas Fadinger; Eseosa Sule, Elijah Just.
With yet another bottom half finish last season (their third in a row), Motherwell clearly need to shake something up - more business in the transfer window, bring in some young talent or a recognised name, just something to give them that extra bit of oomph.
There is a reason they are a Premiership side, but they are one of the weaker ones, and Stenhousemuir will look at their rather uninspiring lineup and think they may be able to pull off an upset.
With neither side's domestic league season kicking off yet, all we have to go off are the standings in Group G. Unsurprisingly, Motherwell sit top of the table with five points, with one win and a draw come penalty victory putting them at the top.
With five teams in the group, one must miss out each gameweek, and in gameweek two it was Stenhousemuir - as a result, from their one game played, they sit bottom, with one defeat at the hands of Greenock Morton.
Remarkably, this is the first meeting between the two sides since the 70’s and 80’s, and fixtures back then were not recorded like they are now.
As a result, we do not have access to their last five games against each other, meaning this game will revive a long-dormant acquaintance.
Stenhousemuir’s Last Five Games:
After a heartbreaking end to the 2024/25 season, you wouldn’t blame Stenhousemuir for having something of a hangover - afterall, having promotion snatched from your grasp can take a while to sink in.
However, they need to shake off the cobwebs quickly if they want to have any aspirations of a League Cup run - even one defeat in the group stages can make it seem like you are a long way back. A result here, even a draw, would help.
Motherwell’s Last Five Games:
An unbeaten start to the season is exactly what Motherwell would have been after. A good run of results in what is effectively their warm up for the league campaign can really start them off on the front foot, and should they carry that cup momentum into the league, then they could race away in the first few weeks.
However, their games against lower league opposition have been a little too close for comfort - at full fitness, Motherwell would beat Clyde across 90 minutes with ease, but with little competitive football under their belt thanks to the summer break, some players are still building up to full fitness.
Our advanced algorithm has analyzed over 200 data points, and has predicted Motherwell to stroll to a 4-0 win here, with two goals coming in each half as they effectively secure qualification to the next round. This model factors in current form, head to head records, player availability and tactical matchups.
Football Park’s Best Bet: Motherwell to Win Both Halves - Premiership teams rarely lose in this competition, and given the gap between Motherwell and Stenhousemuir, a loss for the visitors seems even more unlikely.
Corey O’Donnell (Stenhousemuir): Top scorer last season, and unlucky not to score in their first game against Greenock Morton, O’Donnell’s fitness and form will effectively decide his sides cup form for them. When he is fit, they are by far the better side, adn they will be hoping he is at his influential best against Motherwell.
Lennon Miller (Motherwell): The creative heart of Motherwell’s midfield, Lennon Miller’s four goals and eight assists were absolutely vital to Motherwell staying in the Premiership last season. Without his well-timed goal contributions, things would have been a lot tighter towards the bottom of the table - Miller’s influence pushed them to comfortable safety, and if he and the side can kick on, they can push for a top six finish this season.
