Sunday’s Serie A action sees a huge fixture at the bottom of the table, as Hellas Verona look to seal their survival against Lecce, who know a win would likely take them four points clear of the drop zone with two fixtures remaining.
Verona currently occupy 15th, with Lecce sat five points and two places further back, just a single point above 18th placed Venezia, sitting precariously on the brink of the bottom three. While a draw would certainly be helpful for the home side, Lecce require a win to provide themselves with a buffer as we tick towards the final day.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This game will be broadcasted on OneFootball, with kick-off scheduled for 14:00 GMT on Sunday.
**Hellas Verona Predicted Lineup (3-5-1-1): Lorenzo Montipo (GK); Martin Frese, Nicolas Valentini, Flavius Daniliuc; Domagoj Bradaric, Suat Serdar, Cheikh Niasse, Ondrej Duda, Jackson Tchatchoua; Tomas Suslov; Amin Sarr. **
Though Hellas Verona avoided humiliation against Inter Milan, a game in which many predicted a one sided scoreline, they still suffered defeat to extend their winless run to six. While this run started while they were comfortably clear of the drop zone, things have since tightened up, and if Venezia beat Fiorentina this weekend, Verona will start to look over their shoulders.
This game against Lecce is a welcome break from the tricky fixtures they have encountered since mid-March. Playing a similarly relegation threatened means there is just that little bit more to play for, and given Lecce’s horrendous recent form, Verona will be expected to take advantage.
Though the home side lost their most recent fixture back in October, that was their first defeat to Lecce in six meetings, a run that stretches back to 2019. Given they have the home advantage here, they will be hungry to avenge that defeat in front of their fans.
Lecce Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Wladimiro Falcone (GK); Antonino Galla, Federico Baschirotto, Kialonda Gaspar, Frederic Guilbert; Mohamed Kaba, Balthazar Pierret; Jesper Karlsson, Lassana Coulibaly, Santiago Pierotti; Nikola Krstovic.
Considering Lecce are playing their remaining games with their Serie A status on the line, they have been doing a lost job of it. Their last win, a 3-1 victory against Parma, came right at the end of January. Since then, it has been over three months of narrow defeats and painful draws.
And these defeats have been seriously narrow. Of their eight losses since the end of January, all but one have been by one goal, coming against the likes of AC Milan, Fiorentina, Juventus, Napoli and Roma. While they are good enough to keep games close, Lecce are unable to capitalize on any opposition nerves.
Draws against fellow relegation candidates have held them back the most - 1-1 with Venezia and 0-0 with Monza, the most pronounced of the lot. Had they picked up an extra two points from each match, their chances of survival would be virtually guaranteed by now. But if they lose to Verona here, it looks like their fate will be taken to the final day.
Recent Meetings:
Both sides have a lot on the line. The game may hold slightly less importance for Verona, who will stay clear of the relegation zone whatever the result, but they still know they require a win to guarantee safety.
For Lecce, the equation is elementary - win or they will find themselves in dire straits. With so little time left, they need to get themselves going again, and we think this game presents the perfect opportunity to do so. Lecce to scrape a win.
Hellas Verona 0-1 Lecce
With two low scoring sides, this game won’t be a goal fest. However, Lecce will be more than happy, as long as the solitary goal is on their side of the scoreboard.
