Simone Inzaghi’s Inter know that nothing but a win will do this weekend against Verona if they are to stay within striking distance of table toppers Napoli, who sit three points ahead of the Black and Blues.
Back to back 1-0 defeats to Bologna and Roma in the league have seen Inter tumble off the top of the table, and having been labelled favourites for so much of the season, now find themselves as the underdogs as we enter the title run in.
Verona’s goals are slightly different. With four games remaining, they sit 15th, seven points clear of the relegation zone. While they are in no immediate danger of relegation, they know that one more win would virtually guarantee safety. While notching it against Inter is unlikely, relegation fighting sides are always capable of pulling off shocks.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This game will be available to watch on OneFootball, with kick-off scheduled for 19:45 pm (GMT).
Inter Milan Predicted Lineup (3-5-2): Yann Sommer (GK); Carlos Augusto, Francesco Acerbi, Benjamin Pavard; Federico Dimarco, Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu, Davide Frattesi, Matteo Darmian; Marko Arnautovic, Lautaro Martinez.
Inter Milan’s season up to three weeks ago could have been described any number of ways: superb, high class, dominating, the superlatives are endless. But as soon as the full time whistle blew in their 1-0 defeat to Bologna, it seemed that Inzaghi’s side suddenly became unsure of themselves.
A 3-0 home loss to City rivals AC Milan in the Coppa Italia followed, knocking them out at the semi-final stage, before in-form Roma visited the Giuseppe Meazza last weekend, again taking all three points.
With a Champions League semi-final against a lethal Barcelona approaching, you wouldn’t blame them if their attention were elsewhere. But they cannot lose sight of the fact that the Serie A title is still within reach. They may be stretched thin over the latter stages of two competitions, but should even one of them end successfully, it will be considered a memorable season.
Hellas Verona Predicted Lineup (3-5-2): Lorenzo Montipo (GK); Nicolas Valentini, Diego Coppola, Tobias Slotsager; Domagoj Bradaric, Suat Serdar, Ondrej Duda, Tomas Suslov, Jackson Tchatchoua; Daniel Mosquera, Amin Sarr.
Fortunately for Verona, they managed to do most of the hard work of securing survival before things got too late. And that is just as well, because their form of late is more than relegation-worthy.
They have won just once since February, a run of eight games, and in that time, they have found the back of the net just three times. Had they started this run of form in the relegation zone, they would be in deep trouble, and relegation may have been sealed already.
While they stay safe for now, they will now be looking over their shoulder, as if they continue to fail to pick up points, things around them will start to become uncomfortably congested, and they could be fighting against multiple other teams for survival on the final day.
Recent Meetings:
While fighting relegation can spur a team to new heights, this just seems too much of a tall order for Verona. Inter simply have too much class, and given the importance of a win for both sides, Inter’s quality will come out on top, particularly when paired with title chasing ambitions. Inter to win here.
Inter Milan 4-0 Hellas Verona
There have been some high-scoring meetings between the two sides in recent years, but Inter’s heaviest wins have come away from home. With the side looking to avenge their poor recent form, we think they will amend that record.
