With the Serie A title race edging closer to its climax, Inter Milan know that nothing short of a win will do when they host Lazio on Sunday - should they drop points, Napoli win away at Parma, then the Serie A trophy would be booking its ticket to Naples.
Champions League finalists Inter took a big bite into Napoli’s lead last weekend. The chasers managed an easy win against Torino, while Napoli seemed to be suffering from run-in nerves as they fell to a late equaliser against Genoa, which saw their buffer shrink from three points to just one.
Lazio are also in dire need of a win. The Rome based side currently sit fifth, but level on points with fourth placed Juventus, who occupy the last Champions League spot. A win here would move them into fourth if Juventus drop points, but defeat could spell the end of their Champions League aspirations.
As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
This game will be broadcasted on TNT Sports 2, with kick-off scheduled for 19:45 GMT on Sunday.
Inter Milan Predicted Lineup (3-5-2): Yann Sommer (GK); Alessandro Bastoni, Stefan de Vrij, Yann Bisseck; Federico Dimarco, Piotr Zielinski, Nicolo Barella, Denzel Dumfries; Hakan Calhanoglu, Joaquin Correa; Lautaro Martinez.
A cruising win over Torino last time out was a result with multiple benefits for Inter. Firstly, it saw them close the gap on Napoli, making things extraordinarily precarious in the title race as we enter the final two matchdays.
Secondly, Simone Inzaghi took a risk in rotating the majority of the team after their spectacular 120 minutes 4-3 win over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals. It proved to be worth the risk - they kept a clean sheet and rested some players who had played their hearts out in mid-week, meaning they come into this clash back at full fitness.
However, none of this changes the fact that the title is still out of the hands; Inzaghi’s side is relying on a Napoli slip up, which looks unlikely to come against Parma and Cagliari, 16th and 14th in the league respectively. All Inter can do is win their two remaining games.
Lazio Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Christos Mandas (GK); Luca Pellegrini, Alessio Romagnoli, Mario Gila, Adam Marusic; Nicolo Rovella, Matteo Guendouzi; Mattia Zacagni, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Gustav Isaksen; Valentin Castellanos.
Drawing against Juventus last time out, Lazio missed out on a fantastic chance to jump their rivals and occupy that final Champions League qualification spot in the dying weeks of the season. Now, should both sides win their remaining two games, Lazio would require two remarkably heavy victories to alter the significant goal difference between the two sides.
There is also the potential for them to drop out of the European places altogether - they sit just two points above 7th placed Bologna, who right now lie just outside the Conference League qualification spot. With AC Milan and Roma also in the race for UCL, there is certainly no shortage of pressure on Lazio to get the required results.
And despite their excellent run of form of late, this fixture against Inter comes exactly when they didn’t need it - a defeat here could see them drop out of the top six, and rob them of all momentum picked up in their six game unbeaten run.
Recent Meetings:
Three points are a must for both sides, but unfortunately, one of them knows they will come away disappointed.
Lazio may be in better form, but Inter have been buoyed by their superb run to the Champions League final and will be high on confidence. Theoretically, that will transition into their league games, and they should play flowing, threatening football, knowing how vital a win is.
It will be close, but Inter will get the victory here.
Inter Milan 1-0 Lazio
While we can’t promise it will be a goal fest, it will be a fascinating game nonetheless, and despite a potential shortage of goals, there certainly won’t be a shortage of action.
