Data & A Dream: Meet the Spanish Club Owned By a Gambler Trying to Take Over the World of Football With Data

Football ownership has become increasingly varied in the revenue and commercially viable times we currently occupy.

Some decide that chucking a boatload of cash at a project is the best approach; some take a more measured view and take a foundations-first approach – but every once in a while, we see a unique blueprint that breaks the mould.

And that is exactly what we are currently seeing with La Liga 2 club CD Castellón, who are on the verge of promotion to La Liga with one of the most interesting approaches to success across world football right now.

Who is Bob Voulgaris?

Let's start by looking at Castellon's owner, Bob Voulgaris, the mastermind behind it all.

Voulgaris began his rise to riches off the back of the analytics revolution which emerged in the NBA, incessantly studying the betting markets and searching for an edge to beat the bookies.

This led to him making a fortune, with his eventual betting winnings reaching around $150m, before he was courted by the Dallas Mavericks to put his analytical qualities to professional use.

Voulgaris' dream was to become the owner of an NBA franchise, but with any available opportunities crowded by hungry billionaires looking to outbid each other, he turned his attention to other markets where he could fulfil his dream and landed on European football.

In 2022, he took over at Castellon, a club that had previously been condemned to the lower divisions of the Spanish game, and has already managed to take them to the brink of top-flight football.

Data-Driven Approach

Voulgaris has taken a very unique approach to the club's ownership, similar to that of his friend Tony Bloom and what he employs at Brighton.

The club doesn't employ a sporting director or have any sort of scouting department and does everything purely based on the relevant data attached to each decision.

Voulgaris is a big believer that using data incorrectly is worse than not using data at all, with every decision he makes vetted to the maximum extent before being implemented.

The opening five games this season saw Castellón lose three games and draw two, and with the data behind the results not reading well, Voulgaris decided to sack the manager and bring in Pablo Hernandez (yes, that one), who had been managing the second team.

Since then the team have gone from strength to strength and now sit in second place in La Liga 2 with a real chance of being a La Liga side next season.

It isn't just on the pitch where his approach has paid dividends for the club either, with Voulgaris deciding to invest in a massive new training complex, including a stadium for the youth and women's teams to frequent, which will see them into the future.

What the Data Has Created

Voulgaris' data has been assembled into a squad and manager who favour the attacking side of the game, with Castellon in the top three for almost every attacking metric this season.

If Castellon are losing games, Voulgaris has vowed to stay away from being reactionary, focusing on the underlying trends and using them to make his decisions.

The data-driven approach has also had an impact on Castellon's transfer business, with the club not afraid to sell players at the peak of their powers for profit before utilising their data scouting techniques to identify those who fit their style of play from niche regions of the world and signing them before the elite clubs can ready their chequebooks.

All of this has led to the project at CD Castellon emerging as one of the most interesting and exciting across Europe.

With the Spanish club looking ready to take their first step into the big time next season, it will be interesting to see how the unique approach translates to growth against the nation's biggest clubs.

Just keep an eye out for Castellon over the next couple of years, because they could well be entering the spotlight much more often.
