Tuesday EFL Championship GW44 Review

With the EFL Champinship season reaching it's end, with so much still to play for in the final weeks of the regular season, things are heating up across the table.

With the latest action taking place around the grounds in England's second tier on Tuesday night during gameweek 44.

Stoke City 1-3 Millwall

Milwall's promotion dream remains alive following the Lions 1-3 win away at Stoke City

The first half got off to the perfect start for the Lions, with Camiel Neghi opening the scoring for the away side 20 minutes into the action at the Bet365 Stadium, firing into the top corner from close range.

Striker Josh Coburn should have doubled the lead before the break, smashing over a golden chance after having the ball cut back to him.

However, Millwall would find their second goal ten minutes after the break, as Femi Azeez struck from distance to double the lead, before Stoke hit back just minutes later through an own goal from defender Caleb Taylor.

Although, just ten minutes later Coburn would get his goal, crucially giving Millwall enough for the win and temporarily at least seeing them into second place.

Coventry 5-1 Portsmouth

After earning promotion away at Blackburn Rovers in midweek, Coventry City secured the Championship title with an impressive and comfortable home victory over Portsmouth.

Top scorer Haji Wright started the party by heading home from a corner in the early stages, before a mistake led to Ephron Mason-Clark doubling the lead. WIth an own goal from Portsmouth defender Regan Poole making it three to really get the CBS Arena bouncing.

Portsmouth just had no answer to a dominant and confidence showing by the league leaders, who can now enjoy the final two games of the season as confirmed champions.

Southampton 2-2 Bristol City

Southampton's impressive unbeaten run continued, however they weren't able to win once again as Bristol City earned a point at St. Mary's.

The home side were stunned in the opening five minutes as defender Liam Manning turned into his own net to give the Robins an early advantage.

However, Manning would soon make up for his error, crossing in for striker Cyle Larin to equalise from close range. Despite that though, it would be the away side who would deal the next blow, with Sam Bell heading home from a corner to put Bristol City back in front.

Southampton would respond soon after through Ross Stewart with a header of his own, but the home side couldn't find a winner as they prepare for Wembley in their FA Cup Semi-Fianl this weekend.

Leicester City 2-2 Hull City

One of the biggest shocks in recent Championship history, as Leicester City were officially relegated to EFL League One for just the second time in their history.

Things got off to the worst possible start as Hull took the lead 18 minutes in through Liam Millar.

With the crowd at the King Power seemingly already accepting defeat, hope was given through a quick two minute turnaround. Jordan James equalised from the spot, before Luke Thomas turned home at the back post to complete the turnaround and give Leicester the lead.

However, the reality of relegation hit Leicester again, as Oli Mcburnie struck home to level the game once again

Boos and chants of "sack the board" greeted the full-time whistle, as the inquest at Leicester now begins...

QPR 1-2 Swansea City

Swansea entered the top ten in the table following a win away in London vs Queens Park Rangers.

Brazilian winger Ronald Pereira got the Welsh side in the lead in the opening minutes by firing into the bottom corner.

And for 78 minutes, that's how the score remained. Until the league's top scorer Zan Vipotnik scored his 22nd Championship goal of the season to double the lead and all but secure the points for Swansea.

QPR did pull one back in stoppage time, but it was too little too late as the West London side slipped to 12th place.

West Brom 3-0 Watford

James Morrison's West Brom revival continued at the Hawthorns vs Watford as the Baggies put three past the Hornets without reply.

Isaac Price opened the scoring with a powerful low shot midway through the first half, before Baggies goalkeeper Max O'Leary brilliantly kept out a fierce volley to keep his side in the lead.

Daryl Dike made it two from close range with a header from a free-kick to give West Brom a crucial two goal cushion, before Crystal Palace loanee Daniel Imray rounded off the evening for Morrison's team twenty minutes from time

The result stretches the Baggies to nine and their fourth clean sheet in the last five

Norwich City 2-1 Derby County

Derby County saw a big blow dealt to their playoff hopes as Norwich claimed three points at Carrow Road to go two points behind their opponents.

Mohamed Toure struck an emphatic effort under the roof of the crossbar to give Norwich the lead. The striker scoring his eighth goal in nine Championship games.

Derby hit back in the early stages of the second half through on-loan David Ozoh, however Liam Gibbs scored his first Championship goal of the season for Norwich on the hour mark just minutes later to re-take the lead for his side.

The win for Phlip Clement's team sees them go within two points of Derby. With the Rams now four points off the playoffs with two matches to go.

Oxford Utd 0-1 Wrexham

Wrexham secured a huge win for their playoff ambitions versus relegation threatened Oxford Utd at the Kassam Stadium.

In a game which meant a lot at both ends of hte table, the match saw 30 shots, but despite that both sides struggled to create much big chances.

The game's golden touch came 40 minutes in following a tense first half through Josh Windass, who struck into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Oxford failed to find a response in the first half, meaning Wrexham came away with a big three points which was enough to see them into the top six on goal difference.
