Aguero’s Title Deciding Goal – 2011/12

Sergio Aguero’s 94th minute winner was the final twist in an epic title race which was practically the final kick of the season. Manchester City and Manchester United were level on 86 points each heading into the final game week of the season, with City being ahead only on goal difference. It meant that The Citizens had to equal or better the result of The Red Devils to secure the title.

United thought they had done enough when Wayne Rooney’s first-half goal ensured the team left the Stadium of Light with all three points. However in a cruel twist of events at the Etihad Stadium, City scored two late goals in stoppage time to come back from 2-1 down against Queens Park Rangers. Edin Dzeko’s 92nd minute equaliser kickstarted the unlikely fightback, and Aguero’s goal in the 94th minute made City 3-2 victors to secure their first ever Premier League title.

I think it’s fair to say that Man City never looked back, as they have gone on to win seven Premier League crowns over the 13 years following their first triumph.

Leeds Stay Up – 2021/22

Jack Harrison’s stoppage time heroics against Brentford secured Leeds United’s Premier League survival at the expense of Burnley. Heading into the last round of fixtures, Burnley were only ahead of Leeds on goal difference with both teams tied on 35 points. The Whites had to better the result of Burnley to stay up, meaning a win for The Clarets against Newcastle would automatically send Leeds down regardless of their result.

Burnley went 1-0 down thanks to Callum Wilson’s 20th minute goal, whilst Raphinha’s penalty gave Leeds a 1-0 lead. Minutes later at Turf Moor things went from bad to worse for Burnley as Callum Wilson scored his and Newcastle’s second goal of the game. Burnley looked to have been thrown a lifeline when Maxwel Cornet pulled a goal back in the 69th minute, and Sergi Canos equalised for Brentford against Leeds.

However Canos went from hero to zero when he was shown a red card for a second bookable offence just two minutes later. Leeds went on the charge in search of a winner, and in the 94th minute Harrison’s long-range strike found the back of the net to secure Premier League survival.

Gutierrez Saves Newcastle After Conquering Cancer – 2014/15

In September 2014, Jonas Gutierrez revealed that he was being treated for testicular cancer in his home country of Argentina. The Newcastle midfielder had to undergo surgery after discovering a tumour, which ruled him out of action for most of the season. He returned to action for The Magpies on 4th March 2015 when he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 loss against Manchester United.

Heading into the last round of fixtures four teams were still at risk of relegation, with Hull City occupying the last relegation spot available. Only three points separated the quartet, meaning for Newcastle to guarantee safety they must beat West Ham. Gutierrez rose to the occasion as he provided the assist for his side’s first goal and then went on to net the Toon Army’s second in a 2-0 win.

From thinking about the harsh reality that he couldn't play football again, Jonas Gutierrez took those thoughts and used them as motivation to return to the pitch again. The Argentine international not only wrote his name into the history books of Newcastle United, but secured his place as a forever fan favourite.

Gundogan’s Heroics Make Man City Champions – 2021/22

Once again Manchester City found themselves in the hunt for a Premier League title on the final day of the season. City again held the advantage heading into the match as they sat a point ahead of title challengers Liverpool.

What promised to be a day full of twists and turns didn’t disappoint, as Wolves took the lead at Anfield in only the third minute of the game. Hope looked to be restored for The Reds when Sadio Mane equalised for the hosts and Man City found themselves 2-0 down to Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium. Another goal for Liverpool to give them the lead against Wolves would put them on course to lift the trophy. However Illkay Gundogan derailed the eventual runners up off course when he netted two of the three goals scored within a five-minute time frame. Liverpool went on to win their game 3-1, but it would mean nothing as Man City held out to win their game 3-2. The Citizens subsequently went on to win the second in what would be a run of four consecutive Premier League titles.

Arsenal Become the First-Ever Invincibles – 2003/04

Arsenal were on the verge of creating history when they hosted Leicester City on the final day of the Premier League. The task was simple, avoid defeat and they would become the first ever English side to go unbeaten in the Premier League. The visitors were already relegated going into the encounter, but took an unexpected lead when Paul Dickov fired his shot past Jens Lehmann. However normality swiftly returned when goals from Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira gave The Gunners a 2-1 win to secure the iconic status of being invincible. Arsenal ended the season with a total of 90 points, which included 26 wins and 12 draws.

Blackburn Become the Second Ever Premier League Winner – 1994/95

Blackburn Rovers found themselves in the position of writing their name into the history books with only one game of the season remaining. The Riversiders held a two-point lead over title rivals Manchester United, with the Red Devils needing to win to have a chance of winning the league.

Alan Shearer gave Blackburn a 1-0 lead over Liverpool in the first half, as United went 1-0 down to West Ham thanks to a first half goal from Michael Hughes. Things quickly became complicated for The Rovers as Brian McClair equalised for United at the start of the second half. John Barnes and Jamie Redknapp netted for Liverpool to give them a 2-1 win over Blackburn. All United needed to do was score to win the league, but they failed to do so, which handed Blackburn Rovers their first and only Premier League title.
