Just How Much Trouble are Leicester City In?

Leicester City’s very underwhelming season continued last night with a 1-1 draw away at the Racecourse Ground against newly promoted Wrexham. Fans vented their frustrations at the lacklustre performance as they booed the team off the field after the referee blew the full-time whistle.

It is clear that the season isn’t going quite as expected for Marti Cifuentes’ side, with them having the lowest points at this point of a Championship season since 07/08, when they were relegated to League One.

Not So Fantastic Mr Fox

The problems on the field seem to lie at both ends of the team. Defensively it hasn’t been anywhere near the standard of a team coming down from the Premier League, with just 3 clean sheets and 41 goals conceded after 28 games.

At the other end it has been rather disastrous, with the two recognised strikers at the club, Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka, only having 6 goals scored between them. It was clear that after club legend Jamie Vardy left the club at the end of last season, it was going to be difficult to replace him; however, that little number of goals from strikers raises alarms significantly.

It is very well known that over the past few seasons, following their unexpected relegation from the Premier League in 2022/23, the Foxes have had financial difficulties when it comes to the transfer market. This is due to PSR restraints that have restricted them from spending big due to the high-earning players already at the club. The majority of the players that they have recruited over the past couple of seasons haven’t exactly impressed, and it has been revealed recently by Cifuentes that there are a few players at the club that want to find a move away.

This, of course, will be hard for Cifuentes to manage if players are not all pulling in the same direction to try and turn the season around. This is where the academy can come into play, as over the past decade Leicester have produced an array of talent from their academy. They currently have some very bright prospects coming through, such as Jeremy Monga, Louis Page and Jake Evans. As spending in January is very unlikely, this would be the perfect time for Cifuentes to change his current stance and give them regular gametime. As with these players, you can guarantee that they will give 100 per cent effort, which is something fans don’t see from the current starting eleven.

To make matters worse for the Foxes, the results of their recent legal case regarding their PSR breaches are imminent. According to reports, the expected result of this will be a point deduction penalty of up to 12 points. This could make the season even worse for fans, as a deduction would leave the club in a relegation battle for the third time in four seasons.

For a few years now there has been a divide between the fans and the board at the King Power Stadium, with a boycott taking place in the last home game against West Bromwich Albion. This has come from fans getting frustrated at the lack of communication from the club when it comes to things such as the PSR breaches and not giving reasoning behind a lack of spending over the past four seasons.

So how bad could this season get for Leicester City?

If the expected points deduction were to happen and the Foxes find themselves in a relegation battle, do they have the fight to get themselves out of the situation? That is the worry amongst fans, as so far this season there seems to be a lack of togetherness on the field. With players such as Harry Winks wanting a move away and not being included in matchday squads, the dressing room mood must not be great. And if recent form is considered, then they would be really in trouble in the fight for survival, as a clean sheet hasn’t been achieved in 22 Championship outings.

So surely the best thing for the club is to sell the players that do not want to be around and rely on the youngsters from the academy a bit more so that the fans can be sure that every player that steps onto the pitch on a Saturday afternoon is giving it their all to turn a torrid season around.
