Oscar Bobb to Fulham? - Why A Plethora of Clubs Are Missing a Trick With the City Starlet

With Manchester City channelling their inner Bayern this January and signing all the best players from 'lesser' clubs in the Premier League, a departure from their squad is looking increasingly likely.

Unfortunately for Oscar Bobb, who has struggled to gain any sort of consistent minutes this season, the arrival (and immediate impact) of Antoine Semenyo specifically has seen him pushed even further down the star-studded pecking order which befits Pep Guardiola's side.

With that being said, the rumour mill has begun to swirl this January, and it now looks increasingly likely that Bobb will be under a new roof come the end of the window.

According to reports, Fulham are the frontrunners, having already placed a bid worth around £35m – but there are some other clubs interested who are weighing up what an offer would look like at present.

But even amidst that current interest, it does feel like there are a multitude of clubs who are missing a trick with Oscar Bobb – especially for a quoted price which is more than reasonable in the current climate.

What Bobb Brings

First off, it's worth taking a look at exactly what Bobb is all about – just to set the scene before we look at specific clubs.

Bobb is the sort of player modern football is crying out for more of.

With the more standard nature of the game these days and the tendency for clubs to favour safe structure over instinctual creativity, the Norwegian youngster is something of an anomaly.

Favouring playing off the right but drifting centrally to receive the ball in those daring areas between the opposition midfield and defence, Bobb has a technical ability and off-the-cuff nature to his game which set him apart from the robotic nonsense we are usually subject to.

Those abilities to find gaps also lead to him being more than competent in the number 10 position outright, although he has infrequently been tasked with that in recent times.

His abilities are somewhat marred by his poor injury record, though, with the Norwegian currently facing a short period on the sidelines thanks to a hamstring injury, having only recently returned from a broken leg which he suffered last season.

But although that does raise some questions, the quality that Bobb possesses is undeniable, and putting him in the right side, you could well have a world beater on your hands.

But is the quoted £35m too much, too little, or just right? (No, that wasn't a Goldilocks reference.)

Costs A Few Bobb

The rumoured fee, at the moment anyway, is around £35m. The ability and potential suggest it's a steal; the injury record puts that sentiment into some doubt.

But, even with the concerns, put that fee into perspective, AKA some of the money being thrown about in deals for players who are infinitely less talented than Bobb, and it really does begin to look like a great price.

You have to remember, not only would this be an investment for now, it would also be one for the future, with the lucky club likely either selling him on for massive profit or having an excellent footballer in their ranks for years to come.

So the £35m fee seems pretty sound, if not erring on the side of a cut price – but is Fulham really the best destination for him?

I mean, no shade to Fulham, but it does feel like Bobb could be aiming higher than the West London club.

Where Could Bobb Go?

So, if it isn't Fulham, here are some clubs that could be perfect for Bobb and that Bobb could be perfect for.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund are already interested in the City man and are reportedly deciding whether they like him enough to make an official offer for his services.

Bobb would be a perfect fit for Dortmund in terms of slotting into their system, most likely playing in the right 10 position alongside Julian Brandt. His creativity would be utilised in abundance, and he would also have the freedom to develop other areas of his game, like his goalscoring prowess.

The German club have a track record of developing young talents and sending them onto bigger things for profit, a track record they could be looking to keep up with Bobb – and if they are interested, they likely see the vision.

Newcastle United

What are Newcastle crying out for? Well, the only way you wouldn't know is if you've been living under a rock because it's been the case for the last two years… A creative playmaker who can break down a low block.

And who better to fill that role than a 21-year-old who can also play off the right, where Newcastle also has some issues, and has experience playing in both the Premier League and Europe?

This feels like it should be a no-brainer to at least enquire about terms, and if I were Eddie Howe, I'd be absolutely all over this one.

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs' pool of attacking talent has dwindled all season, mainly thanks to injuries, but the recent sale of Brennan Johnson has left somewhat of a hole on that right-hand side in terms of depth.

Not only that, but Spurs have struggled with their creativity at points and are in need of a bit of a spark to brighten up their attacking output.

So, what is stopping them from going after Oscar Bobb this January? Well, the only thing I can think of is that he might prefer Fulham with the current state of the club…
