Coventry City sit top of the Championship table with 19 points from their first nine matches. The Sky Blues leapfrogged Middlesbrough to inherit the top spot as Boro fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Portsmouth. Coventry’s 5-0 demolition of Sheffield Wednesday on the weekend means that Frank Lampard’s men are the only team in the EFL yet to lose a league fixture this campaign.

It’s fair to say that Coventry City have forced themselves into the conversation of being genuine title challengers this season. In the space of a week, the Sky Blues have won three consecutive games, scored 12 goals and kept three clean sheets - an ominous message which will send vibrations through the fabric of the Championship.
If their unbeaten status isn’t noteworthy enough, then the Sky Blues’ staggering +20 goal difference will certainly be something that grabs the attention of their competitors. To put this stat into perspective, the team with the second-highest goal difference - Ipswich Town - only has +7 in the same metric.
Coventry aren’t just winning games; they are blowing teams out of the water in dominant fashion. Frank Lampard’s men have accumulated their 19 points through a combination of five wins and four draws.
Out of these five victories, the club have scored 24 goals, an average of 4.8 goals per game. Coventry’s biggest win came against QPR in game week three, a 7-1 annihilation which has since set the tone of Lampard’s unforgiving style of play this season.

Haji Wright
There have been some fine individual performances amongst a catalogue of stellar team showings this season, with Haji Wright’s form hard to look past. The 27-year-old has already scored nine goals in all competitions this campaign, three-quarters of his goal tally from the whole of the 2024/25 season.
The American international has been the main man upfront for Coventry so far, a positional change from being out on the left wing from previous campaigns. Wright has taken this opportunity to spearhead the Sky Blues attack with both hands, something that his predecessors have failed to do in recent seasons.
Victor Torp
Victor Torp has been another vital player in Frank Lampard’s team, offering the perfect blend of defensive and attacking output. Playing as one of the two defensive midfielders in Coventry’s 4-2-3-1 formation, the 26-year-old has surprisingly notched up five goals already this season.
However, the Danish international picked up an ankle injury against Millwall, meaning that the Sky Blues will be without their midfield maestro for the foreseeable future. Torp joined Coventry in January 2024 and has since nailed down a midfield spot due to his quality and versatility.
Brandon Thomas-Asante
It’s fair to say that Brandon Thomas-Asante has ignited his career with Coventry after struggling to get going last season. The 26-year-old has eight goal contributions across nine games in all competitions, more than he managed in the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign.
The former West Brom man is also another player to benefit from a positional change, moving from being a striker to a player who can play on both wings. The Ghanaian’s versatility and flexibility also allow him to play in behind the striker, giving Lampard a whole host of options in selecting his front four.
Thomas-Asante's five goals and three assists so far this season has been enough to receive an international call-up for Ghana’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

When Frank Lampard became the Coventry City manager on 28th November 2024, the club were sitting in 17th place in the table. Their sights were firmly fixated on looking down at their opponents facing the drop, as the Sky Blues hovered two points above the relegation zone.
However, Lampard transformed this struggling side into a confident, free-flowing team that plays without fear. Lampard led Coventry to their best league run for 55 years, winning nine games across a 10-match period.
The West Midlands-based club finished the 2024/25 season in fifth place, losing to Sunderland in the semi-finals of the play-offs.
The former Chelsea boss highlighted in an interview with BBC Sport what problems he had to fix in order to turn around the form of the Sky Blues.
“When you get in, you try and analyse the problems quickly, and we were conceding too many goals.” Lampard told BBC Sport.
“We weren’t compact enough, we weren’t aggressive enough, so we tried to really prioritise our off-the-ball work.
“The players have done it because they’ve bought into everything we’ve tried to say.”
For the 14 games that Mark Robins was in charge of Coventry City for, he only won four games, averaging 1.07 points per game. However, the 18 matches Lampard oversaw resulted in 11 victories, with an average of 2 points per game.
Fast forward to the present day, and the Sky Blues are averaging 2.11 points per game and are yet to lose a league game this season. Their attacking, aggressive and high intensity work rate is too much for teams to handle, with Lampard making Coventry a completely unrecognisable side compared to this time last year.
