The Resurgence of Kieffer Moore: From Play-Off Shame to Golden Boot Race

From a disastrous play-off final performance to being the spearhead of Wrexham’s attack, Kieffer Moore has reignited his career at the Red Dragons. The 33-year-old forward has responded to the criticism received from last season, showing his class and experience with the new team on the block. So how did we get to this point?

The Decline Of Kieffer Moore

Moore had a rather underwhelming 2024/25 campaign with Sheffield United, as he scored only five goals in 28 Championship appearances for the Blades. A chance to change the narrative came when Sheffield United faced Sunderland in the 2024/25 play-off final.

However what could’ve been a redemption arc quickly turned into a nightmare, as the Welshman was at fault for Sunderland’s second and decisive goal. Moore’s loose pass in the 95th minute of the game fell into the path of Tommy Watson, who subsequently finessed the ball past Michael Cooper.

A misplaced pass had cost the Blades promotion to the Premier League with only Kieffer Moore to blame. Naturally fans jumped on the bandwagon, with Moore’s future looking certain to be away from the South Yorkshire side.

After being originally signed on a three-year deal with the Blades in July 2024, the striker’s time at the club had been cut short, with a transfer to Wrexham providing Moore with a chance to start afresh.

The Revival Of Kieffer Moore

Moore joined Wrexham on a permanent transfer from Sheffield United on a three-year contract, putting an end to his short and painful spell with the Blades. However the Welshman’s experience in both the Championship and at international level is exactly what the newly promoted Red Dragons needed.

Following three consecutive promotions the Welsh side gathered a whole host of players with Championship experience in the summer transfer window. This has enabled Moore to become a starter right from the off, starting all five league games so far this season.

The 6ft 5in forward has already made a positive start to life at Wrexham, as he has scored four league goals and provided one assist in five Championship matches this campaign. The striker has also scored in his only EFL Cup appearance of the season, proving to be a reliable and consistent force up front.

If you rewind the clock back to this time last year, Moore had only scored once in his first four league games, a stark contrast to the form he is in now. The Red Dragons player has become an integral part Phil Parkinson’s squad and isn’t showing any signs of his goalscoring form slowing down.

Kieffer Moore’s Career So Far

Kieffer Moore’s footballing journey is a story that starts from the very bottom, as he began his career in non-league with Truro City. The Welsh international also spent time with fellow non-league side Dorchester Town, before moving to former Championship team Yeovil Town in 2013.

Moore racked up the first of his many appearances in the Championship, as he played 20 games for the Glovers in England’s second tier, with 30 more appearances made in League One.

After a few seasons away from England’s top four leagues, Moore earnt a transfer to Ipswich Town in January 2017. After spending the first half of the 2017/18 campaign on loan at Rotherham United, the Welsh forward was sold to Championship club Barnsley. The South Yorkshire based side were keen to acquire Moore after he scored 13 league goals in just 22 league games.

The former Barnsley player netted 17 goals in 31 league appearances in the 2018/19 campaign. Spells at Wigan Athletic and Cardiff City followed each other in successive seasons, as Moore scored 10 and then 20 league goals for the respective clubs.

Since the 2020/21 campaign with Cardiff, the Welsh striker has struggled to find his goalscoring touch. A mixture of injuries and lack of playing time have halted the 33-year-olds progress, however his arrival at Wrexham looks to be a shift in the narrative.

Moore is also an experienced international player having made 50 caps for Wales. The striker then marked the milestone by scoring in the encounter against Kazakhstan, a game which Wales won 1-0.

Appearances at EURO 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup gives the Wrexham forward a plethora of experience when combined with his domestic appearances. Overall the Welsh international has bounced back from a period of instability to show the critics that he can still deliver on both the domestic and international stage.
