Who is Junior Diouf? The NCAA Wonderkid With Offers In Europe

The American collegiate system is one of the most interesting structures in all of sport, providing young athletes of almost every sport with a paid opportunity to play and develop before having the chance to move into the professional game.

More often than not, players who graduate from the NCAA university system end up in the draft portal, where they are subsequently picked up by, in football's case, an MLS club who sees them as a top prospect for the future.

But in some cases, that metaphorical pre-written script is ripped up, and those who have what it takes to make it pro walk a different path.

And that is exactly what could be about to happen with highly rated Senegalese centre forward Junior Diouf.

Who Is Junior Diouf?

Before we delve into the specifics of the story, let's take a magnifying glass to the man in the spotlight and have a little look at why Diouf is making headlines.

The 18-year-old laced up for his first collegiate season this year, playing over at Grand Canyon University – and it didn't take him long to put the world on notice.

Diouf careered through his freshman year in the clinical fashion expected from a seasoned vet and ended the American soccer calendar with a mightily impressive total of 18 goals, which were accompanied by a creatively astute total of six assists in just 21 games.

All of this meant that, when draft season appeared on the horizon, many believed Diouf was a shoo-in to be the first pick… But that isn't how it has played out.

Diouf Snubs Draft For Big Move?

This week was decision time for the signing of Adidas Generation contracts ahead of the draft.

Adidas Generation is an initiative which allows a very select few of the most highly regarded prospects, usually those in the underclassmen years of their collegiate journey, to sign directly to the MLS through the special programme.

This means they can bypass the traditional SuperDraft eligibility rules, giving MLS clubs a chance to sign the chosen talent early with salary cap relief in place.

It was a shock to the system for many and sparked mass conversation about what Diouf may be planning instead of the traditional route.

Collegiate Continuation, A USL Adventure… Or Something Else?

There are a few routes that Junior Diouf could go down now we know the draft is off the table.

The first is that he continues his collegiate journey at Grand Canyon University, likely receiving a hefty sum from the organisation's reportedly vast student fund.

Considering Diouf has only just announced himself on the scene, this is a plausible option, but many believe his quality leads to the next step being on the cards in the near future.

The second is that he controversially chooses to sign with the USL and keep everyone waiting for his MLS move. This would give him a wider variety of options and allow him to develop away from the pressured limelight of America's pinnacle division.

But the final option is the one which has caught the attention of the media over the past couple of days and is seemingly emerging as the most likely option.

Diouf Tempted By Europe?!

Reports yesterday spread throughout the media that Junior Diouf has attracted attention from Europe.

This was an option that blindsided most over in the States but made his decision to not enter the draft one with clearer reasoning.

Reports state that Diouf has received an offer from Belgian giant Anderlecht, with de Paars-Witten eager to bring Diouf to Europe to begin his journey in the professional game.

and giving them the platform to blossom on the professional stage – and when they want a player, it's usually for a very good reason.

And it seems, at least at this stage, that the Anderlecht move is Diouf's desired outcome – although the youngster is yet to publicly comment on what is next for him.

If he does move to Europe, it will be a unique case. Those from the collegiate system don't often step outside of America, especially not as their very first foray into the pro game.

But the fact that Junior Diouf is set to break the mould in such an emphatic manner speaks volumes about the talent he has and just how good he could be.

There's only one thing left to say… Remember the name: Junior Diouf.
