Chelsea Create WSL History

Chelsea made some Women’s Super League history in Sunday lunchtime’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool at St Helens Stadium.

Since suffering a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool back in May last year, the Blues have gone on a staggering 34-match unbeaten run in the league – with a majority of this run coming under current coach Sonia Bompastor.

Their 34-match unbeaten WSL run bested the previous record of 33, also set by Chelsea back in 2021, nonetheless.

Their run of 28 wins and six draws has seen them completely dominate English domestic football across three seasons now, and fans continue to wonder – will it ever end?

A Dominant Run By England’s Finest

Chelsea’s run began when they were in a spot of jeopardy towards the end of the 2023/24 season, in what was also Emma Hayes’ final campaign in charge at Stamford Bridge.

After that defeat to Liverpool, Chelsea needed to win big in their last three games in order to win the league against a Manchester City side who would also end on 55 points at the season’s end.

In Hayes’ final three games, the Blues demolished Bristol City 8-0, beat Tottenham 1-0, and battered City’s rival Manchester United 6-0 away on the final day to seal what would be their fifth league title on the bounce courtesy of goal difference.

During the 2024 summer, Chelsea’s mightily successful coach and legend Hayes decided to venture into international football to take charge of the United States for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics and onwards.

Into the Chelsea dugout came ex-Olympique Lyonnais coach and three-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winner Bompastor, who had become the first person in the women’s game to have won the major European honour both as a player and as a manager.

Since her arrival, she took the foundations Hayes had left for her, and Todd Boehly decided to invest large in the women’s side, spending now upwards of £1m on players that was before near unforeseen in women’s football.

Bompastor has been able to find the best out of Lauren James, who has become arguably Chelsea’s most influential player over the past two seasons – especially with Sam Kerr’s ACL injury which kept her out of action for almost the entire 2024/25 season, suggesting what an excellent job the French boss managed to achieve in her first season.

She also broke another record during last season, becoming the first manager to win the league title in their first campaign in charge – going unbeaten at that, of course.

Continuing on from their three thumping victories at the end of the 23/24 season, Chelsea continued their dominance, winning each of their opening nine matches to start the 24/25 campaign.

After charging to the league title last season on 60 points, 12 ahead of second place Arsenal, it wasn’t all smiles at Stamford Bridge as the goal remained to finally be crowned Champions of Europe; a title which they saw headed the way of north London instead.

Nevertheless, however, Chelsea still managed to pick up a domestic treble, showcasing their domestic dominance.

They have started this campaign much the same, although they have already matched their draw tally from the entirety of last season.

This start has seen them pick up 21 points from their opening nine games, leaving them second in the league and three behind City, however.

Today’s draw in Merseyside also saw the Blues fail to win for two consecutive WSL games for the first time in 1,393 days.

Even though they have picked up yet another magnificent record in English football, it cannot be denied that they still have a lot of work to do if they are to win seven league titles on the spin or finally earn their first European crown.
