EFL Panini Collection Released: A Nostalgic Favourite Returns

Strap yourselves in, because the oncoming wave of nostalgia has the potential to be overwhelming - Panini has partnered with the EFL to create a sticker collection of players from all 72 clubs in England's second, third, and fourth divisions.

For so many of us, the Panini sticker books have long been a primary way of becoming invested in major international tournaments, growing familiar with unfamiliar teams, and socialising with others, either discussing your collection so far or trading cards in a bid to expand it.

Let me take you back to the 2018 World Cup - myself, my dad and my brother worked tirelessly to collect as many cards as possible, and eventually we completed the entire book - the day before the final, no less.

That feeling when you tear a pack open to reveal Messi, Kane, or Ronaldo is incomparable, and not only was it an incredibly rewarding task to get stuck into, but it also became a shared interest between myself and countless others.

Panini’s return to the EFL has the potential to do wonders for the English game. The sticker collection aspect will engage fans who do not typically follow the lower tiers of the English football pyramid, while it will also give passionate EFL fans another discussion, passion, and hobby.

An Return Fit For A King

Famous for releasing a sticker collection book for every World Cup since 1970, Panini is a beloved name throughout football, and the launch of the EFL collection was suitably high-profile.

Wednesday's launch event for the collection was held at none other than Manchester’s National Football Museum, and was attended by some of the EFL’s most recognisable names, including Todd Cantwell, Billy Sharp, Adebayo Akinfenwa, and the man on fire himself, Will Grigg.

The collection itself consists of 788 individual stickers, including club badges, kits, ‘Elite’ and ‘Key Player’ items, and even stats and facts on each item, providing an immersive, informative experience for fans everywhere.

This represents Panini’s first collaboration with the EFL since the late 2000s, and although they collaborated again in 2010/11, these were not their trademark sticker books, but card binders instead.

At the launch in Manchester, both Panini and EFL top dogs were quick to emphasise the importance of their new product. Katie Gritt, Head of Sport Marketing at Panini, said, “We know how important football is to so many millions of fans, and the collection celebrates the incredible talents across the EFL as well as legends of the game!”

“We can’t wait to see fans’ reactions to those all-important shinies - the collection will add some extra fun to matchday experiences across all three divisions.”

Similarly enthusiastic about the launch, the EFL’s Chief Commercial Officer Ben Wright was full of praise for the new product, stating, “Working with Panini gives fans a chance to relive the nostalgia of collecting while creating new memories for the next generation. It’s a brilliant way to showcase the heart and soul of EFL football.”

Officially released to the public today, collection cards and albums will be stocked in over 8000 stores across the UK, and first-time collectors will be able to kick-start their library with the EFL Starter Pack, which includes an album and five sticker packs.

Though at heart a fan of a Premier League club, I am a football fan first and foremost, and this is definitely something I will be investing in as I attempt to grow closer to England’s lower tiers. Will you be joining me?
