Super Sam Surridge's Opening Day Brace in Nashville

Sam Surridge’s deadly brace against the New England Revolution in Nashville’s opening night 4-1 victory made a statement to the rest of the league. Once again, the Berkshire-born bagsman is a serious golden boot contender, and this season, it looks even more likely that he will pip Lionel Messi to the award.

An experienced onlooking striker could identify rapidly that Surridge’s pair of finishes were those of a seasoned poacher. The perfect follow-up to the club announcing Surridge’s contract extension, which will now run on until the end of the 2027/28 season, with the possibility of a further year included.

The announcement came a handful of days after Surridge scored his first goal of the season, against Atletico Ottawa in the Champions' Cup.

Reliving the Goals

The first effort arrived within five minutes of a ball being kicked at GEODIS Park. A sweet, calculated set-piece routine saw Edvard Tagseth take a fake corner, skipping over the ball and leaving it for debutant Cristian Espinoza to deliver a trademark, menacing ball into the box.

Centre half, Jeisson Palacios, connected with the delivery with a loose hanging leg, the ball comically ballooned off Warren Madrigal’s shoulder and into the path of an onrushing Englishman, who thrashed home from within 10 yards range.

The passage of play was a recipe which Nashville’s set-piece coach can take credit for, with a pinch of luck on the side.

The Tennesee based outfit would double their lead via Surridge 10 minutes later. New England’s complacent passing around the back would punish them after a misplaced pass was intercepted by Australian international Patrick Yazbek.

The Boys in Gold sprang into life, quickly recycling possession to find Madrigal on the left flank. The forward, who joined from the Primera División of Costa Rica this winter, became the 7th player in MLS history to pick up three goal contributions on his debut. A simply unforgettable night for the 2004-born talent.

Tagseth was involved once again, this time not through trickery, as he received a through ball from Madrigal and delivered an acute first-time cross which found a pouncing Surridge.

Revs’ shot stopper, Matt Turner, managed to get both hands on the ball, but could only parry the ball straight into Surridge’s path once more, bouncing off the forward’s head, perhaps unknowingly, and into the side netting.

An Oustanding Reincarnation in Music City

Surridge has historically consistently proved he can compete with the best forwards in MLS. Scoring 53 goals in 89 appearances for the team he joined in 2023. He has undoubtedly been assisted by his partner through it all, 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar, who himself had been crying out for a large centre forward alongside him.

His fine form in front of goal led with the former Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth man linked with a return to the heights of the English pyramid, with both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town.

Despite his contract extension and clear commitment to the Stateside club, there is still a realistic possibility that clubs, specifically from England, continue to sniff around the 27-year-old.

His previous track record may suggest that he isn’t necessarily built for the top two tiers of the English game. Surridge’s best season came for Nottingham Forest in the 2021/22 campaign when he bagged seven goals in 20 Championship appearances. Unless you count the eight goals he scored on loan at both Yeovil Town and Oldham Athletic, respectively, in League Two between 2017 and 2019.

However, with no concerns about a World Cup call-up in a league full of players stressing over their status within the international picture. Surridge has the opportunity to drive his full focus into scoring as many as possible, as we saw in Nashville’s clash with the Revolution.

Now with instilled confidence thanks to his period in MLS, the Englishman could very well return to his homeland and find his performance levels increase drastically. A statement that Rob Edwards and Kieran McKenna clearly believed in after their interest in the star striker this winter.

Are Nashville Contenders for the Cup?

Nashville finished 6th in the Eastern Conference last year and clinched silverware for the first time in the 2020 expansion franchise’s history. However, this success was simply a basis for building on.

The addition of Espinoza to B.J. Callaghan’s forward line has left them with one of the most lethal front threes in the division, teaming up with 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar, and, of course, Surridge. Together, they provide the perfect blending of clinical ball-striking, creative talent, and dynamic energy.

Drafting in Maxwell Woledzi from Norway’s top flight has also handed Nashville a direct replacement for the outgoing Walker Zimmerman. Both Woledzi and Espinoza started for their new club last night, showcasing why the reigning U.S. Open Cup Champions are serious contenders to top the East come the end of 2026.
