Last five results when Liverpool have played Everton:
On the surface, a third place finish seems pretty good, and one that Liverpool would have taken any other season. But at the end of the campaign, Liverpool were left ruing missed chances.
At the end of matchweek 22, they were five points clear at the top, and looking imperious. In past seasons, fans would have expected them to see out the rest of the season from there, pummeling teams into submission.
However, Liverpools shaky away form let them down in the second half of the campaign. It speaks volumes that if the league was decided simply on home form, the Scouser’s would have added a second premier league trophy to their cabinet. But in terms of away form, they trailed champions Manchester City by 10 points, and runners up Arsenal by eight.
Losing stalwart defender Joel Matip and the mercurial brilliance of Thiago Alcantara in midfield, Liverpool need to uncover good value alternatives if they are to equal last season's finish.
Best result: Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea. (Liverpool: Jota 23’, Bradley 39’, Szoboszlai 65’, Diaz 79’. Chelsea: Nkunku 71’).
Worst result: Everton 2-0 Liverpool, (Branthwaite 27’, Calvert-Lewin 58’).
I do not envy Arne Slot this season. Anyone would find it immensely difficult to fill the shoes of Jurgen Klopp who, after a brilliant nine years where he took them from relative obscurity to becoming Premier League and Champions League winners, left at the end of last season.
However, in Slot’s time at Feyenoord, he took them to a UEFA Conference League final and won the clubs first league title since 2017 in the 2022/23 season, the latter a significant achievement when the domination of Ajax and PSV in Dutch football is taken into account.
Also winning the Dutch Cup last season, his name started to carry more and more pedigree to bigger European clubs, and Liverpool eventually bit the bullet upon Klopp’s resignation announcement.
Following in a line of sought after Dutch coaches, Slot is renowned for his “beautiful football”, dominating possession and employing an intense counter press, which suits Liverpool well.
Already popular with the Liverpool fans despite not having taken charge of a competitive match, Liverpool will certainly be a team to keep an eye on next season.
The clubs primary attacking threat since 2017, Salah never seems to slow down. Just when you think he’s hit a run of poor form, he goes and bags 5 goals in as many appearances and suddenly he’s back to his best.
His form throughout his Liverpool career has been remarkable: 300 Goals and Assists in 317 starts, a Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Super Cup medal, three Premier League golden boots, the Puskas award, and not to mention the fastest hat trick in Champions league history, Salah has been one of the worlds best players for the best part of a decade.
However, he has just one year left on his contract, and with no indication that he will receive an offer of an extension, this could well be his last season in the top flight for the foreseeable future. At 32, he is in his prime, and Liverpool would do well to secure a contract renewable as soon as convenient.
However, if this is to be the last time he graces the Premier League, be sure to savour every moment of the Egyptian Kings brilliance.
With Liverpool’s lack of transfer market action, the fans are starting to get a little antsy. So antsy in fact that Arne slot recently addressed the issue, saying he would be “surprised” if Liverpool were not to sign anyone this summer.
They certainly need to, as the absence of Thiago and Matip leave gaping holes in their squad depth, and there is no James milner to fill those gaps now. However, they could be waiting for the frenzy of spending to die down, so that they can pick and approach their targets relatively unhindered.
With the squad as it is, they are definitely strong enough to make the top 4, but if they are to push for the title, move’s must be made.
