Match Preview: AFC Wimbledon vs Ipswich Town - Expert Analysis
Ipswich Town, fresh from their promotion to the Premier League, will travel to face AFC Wimbledon in the second round of the EFL Cup. These two clubs were in the same division as recently as 2022, but the fortunes of both teams have drastically diverged since then. Ipswich has skyrocketed to the top tier of English football, while Wimbledon remains in League Two, aiming for a return to League One.
Ipswich Town has had a tough start to their Premier League campaign, facing Liverpool and Manchester City in their opening fixtures, both of which ended in defeat. Despite the losses, Ipswich showed glimpses of promise, notably taking the lead against City before eventually succumbing to a 4-1 loss. They currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League, with their focus on getting their season up and running in this cup tie.
AFC Wimbledon, on the other hand, has had a strong start to their season in League Two. They have secured four wins in their last five matches across all competitions, placing them in a solid mid-table position with six points from three league games. Their only blemish so far was a defeat to EFL debutants Bromley, but they have bounced back with victories over Colchester United and Cheltenham Town in the league, as well as Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Trophy.
These teams have only met once in recent years, with Ipswich winning 3-1 at Plough Lane in the third round of the FA Cup back in January. Before that, they last shared the same division in 2022. Ipswich will be keen to avoid an upset similar to their FA Cup exit to non-league Maidstone United in the following round.
Ipswich Town:
AFC Wimbledon:
For AFC Wimbledon, wing-back Huseyin Biler remains a doubt after being forced off in their EFL Trophy win over Wycombe. Josh Neufville could continue to deputize if Biler doesn’t recover in time. New signing Riley Harbottle has impressed with his performances and is expected to start again, while Isaac Ogundere could be on the bench after being replaced by Harbottle.
Ipswich Town will be without new signing Kalvin Phillips, who picked up a minor knock and would have been ineligible to face his parent club Manchester City last weekend. He joins Wes Burns, Nathan Broadhead, George Hirst, and Janoi Donacien on the sidelines. Meanwhile, after a shaky debut, Arijanet Muric might lose his spot in goal to Christian Walton, who started in the opening match against Liverpool. Jens Cajuste, Dara O'Shea, and Jack Clarke could all make their first appearances for the club.
AFC Wimbledon:

Keep an eye on Ipswich Town’s new signing Jack Clarke, who could make his debut in this match. Clarke is known for his creativity and goal-scoring ability, and he’ll be eager to make an impact as he looks to secure a regular spot in the team.
The match kicks off at 7:45 PM on Wednesday, but unfortunately, it is not available to watch live in the UK. Fans can follow the action through live updates or radio broadcasts.
