Netherlands vs Austria: Team News, Lineups and Predictions
Both Netherlands and Austria could be unchanged ahead of their final Group D clash, a group from which they both look likely to advance.
Netherlands' controversial point against France last time out took their tally to four points and joint top of the group. Only if France and Austria win could the Dutch drop them down to third, a spot which they are still expected to progress from as one of the best third placed teams.
Austria meanwhile would like to take a point from this game to ensure their safe passage through to the next round, as if they lose and remain on three points there is a small chance they don’t make it to the knockouts, dependent on results elsewhere.

Group D third is 99.9% through.
One of the biggest winners of the night is Hungary 🇭🇺 (Group A), whose chances to qualify went from 71% to 87%.#euro2024 pic.twitter.com/KWExTw2fQd
Both sides have a fully fit squad, and after good results for both in their previous games, both will be looking to kick on here and qualify in the top two.
Netherlands altered their approach for the France game, dropping central midfielder Joey Veerman for Leverkusen right wingback Jeremie Frimpong, who proved useful as a right winger, and all indicators point to a similar lineup this time round, with Tijjani Reijnders likely to drop deeper from his usual attacking midfielder role into Veerman’s more defensive position.
Austria, after seeing a marked improvement in their attacking output against Poland, look likely to start Marko Arnautovic up front again, after Michael Gregoritsch had a fruitless time against France.
It is a one sided head to head between the two nations, with the Oranje winning all 6 of their previous meetings, with 5 of them coming since the turn of the century.

However, the Dutch face an entirely different challenge against Ralf Rangnick’s well organized side, who have lost just one of their last 9 games, scoring in all of those except the defeat to France in matchweek 1.
Netherlands form (Most recent result on the right): LWWWD. Austria form: WWDLW. When and where: 5pm, Olympiastadion, Berlin. Where can I watch it: BBC 2, BBC Iplayer.
Netherlands (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen (GK), Dumfries, Ake, Van Dijk, De Vrij, Schouten, Reijnders, Frimpong, Simons, Gakpo, Depay.
Austria (4-3-2-1): Pentz (GK), Posch, Mwene, Leinhart, Trauner, Seiwald, Grillitsch, Laimer, Baumgartner, Sabitzer, Arnautovic.
The game against France, which the Dutch would have won had VAR not incorrectly (in my opinion at least) intervened, was not reflective of the team as a whole. The French are one of very few nations where other international superpowers feel more comfortable sitting back than taking the game to them, and it was clear that dropping deep was not typically Ronald Koeman's style.
But the team did what was required of them, and I think it is reasonable to expect a return to electric attacking form from the Dutch, who with the presence of Frimpong higher up the pitch, have added a new dimension to their attack.
Austrian left back Phillipp Mwene is a good match for pace with Frimpong, but with the also rapid Denzel Dumfries overlapping him on the outside, I expect it to be just that step too far for the Austrians to deal with.
However, if they stick to their high-pressing, high tempo game plan, then there is no reason they can’t force the Netherlands into a sloppy mistake or two, and they certainly have the technical ability in the attack to punish incidents like these.
Laimer-Seiwald-Sabitzer-Grillitsch-Mwene-Baumgartner. Rangnick assembled a strong Bundesliga core (some playing different positions) to play his aggressive high-press to compress the pitch & Fast build-up style. It will be a hard-fought game, but I think the Dutch will have just enough about them to take three points and finish in the top two along with France.
Prediction: 2-1 Netherlands
