One Game From Glory

The mission is almost accomplished. The nation holds its collective breath, as it prepares for Sundays showpiece final in Berlin against Spain.

This group of players, led by a much maligned manager, are 90 (or 120 minutes – hopefully not) away from immortality. If Southgate is to deliver England's first trophy since 1966, then Baddiel & Skinner may have to amend the Lyrics to “Three Lions” and finally, it is potentially ‘coming home’.

We’ve been here before. Just a few years back, on our own patch. The margins were narrow, losing to the Italians on a penalty shootout. However, this is the first time England have reached a major final on foreign soil. The prospect of ending 58 years of hurt on German territory would make a victory all the more sweet.

The Spanish stand in the way. A revitalised team with impressive wingers, the Spaniards have lit up an otherwise dull tournament with their attacking, front footed nature.

In Lamine Yamal, they have a teenager who has slotted in seamlessly, a 17 year old who epitomises the dynamism of the team. His Semi Final goal will be replayed for years to come, and he will undoubtedly be a key player on Sunday night.

The mission for Southgate and his clan was to be in Berlin on July 14th. The ultimate goal will be fulfilled should Harry Kane hold the trophy aloft after 7 games of gritty resilient performances. Or will it be an unlikely hero to elevate this team to new heights. Ollie Watkins instinctive turn and world class finish gives Southgate an unfamiliar headache surrounding his choice of starting striker.

This is a group filled with an array of talent, some of the best players in the world. The impressive Jude Bellingham has many moments of magic up his sleeve, with an impressive collection of medals already at the age of 21. England may rely on his class to ensure they board the plane with Silverware as their hand luggage.

Several suggest that success is written in the stars for England. Goosebumps fill the nations bodies amongst the anticipation of a victory in Berlin. Let’s hope they ensure that Football, finally comes home…….
