The Frank Lampard Resurgence: Coventry City Push For Promotion

Coventry City embarked on this week with a five-game win streak, security in their playoff position and desires of playing in the elite division of English football. Of course, someone had to rain on their parade; Derby County were the culprits as they outclassed the leagues high-flyers on home soil on Tuesday night. The 2-0 defeat to The Rams has left a sour taste to Coventry’s series of sweet victories, but The Sky Blues must not forget what they have overcome under new management.

Promotion was a word which was completely alien to Coventry three months ago. That was until a well-rested Frank Lampard marked his presence as the new head coach. A name that needs no introduction.

Super Frank Lampard

A juxtaposition to his career on the pitch, Frank Lampard has had a rocky relationship with managerial roles. Despite a strong campaign with Derby County in 2018/19 and exceeding expectations in his first year at Chelsea, the ex-England midfielder struggled to adapt to life as the man in charge. A sacking from Chelsea - the club he called home - after less than two years, followed by a torrid time at Everton more or less resembled Lampard’s experiences in management going into this Championship proposal.

The three-time Premier League winner took charge of Coventry City just shy of December last year, as the club occupied 17th position only two points off the drop. Prior to Lampard’s reign, the West Midlands side were quite unfamiliar with change as cult-hero Mark Robins took centre stage in the dugout for the best part of seven years.

The adoration of Mark Robins naturally put Frank Lampard on his tiptoes arriving as a Sky Blue. Many believed he was heading down similar tracks of some of his England cohorts, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, as the pair have recently stumbled at the helm of their respective managements. Though, for Lampard, a step down to the Championship following an 18-month interlude has emerged to be an absolute breath of fresh air.

With only five losses in 20 league matches, the 46-year-old is quickly reinstating his ‘super’ title – guiding The Sky Blues to an extended programme of playoff football come May this year.

Play Up Sky Blues

Coventry City’s rollercoaster season has restored the infamous saying ‘it is a marathon not a sprint’. Just 15 weeks ago, the club were sat in 17th and a bottom half finish looked to be the only foreseeable outcome. However, it is a good job the season does not end in December as Coventry now hold down 6th spot in the league after a monumental run of form and a handful of belated winning goals. A prime example of these untimely winners occurred as recent as Saturday afternoon when latecomer Bobby Thomas stepped up to fire a 97th minute strike past Stoke City, snatching all three points for the sky-blue camp.

It is a stellar nine wins from a possible 11 games for Super Frank’s men, with the only jolts coming to title-challengers Leeds United and last night’s anomaly defeat to Derby County. Despite such a wasteful performance away at Pride Park, Coventry are still well and truly submerged in the promotion fight entering the final games that remain.

The Last Nine

Reaching the business end of the season, The Sky Blues look to attack these final fixtures in good stead. Despite a loss in their last match, Coventry seem to be absorbing any threat that is thrown at them. Although, with some tricky games approaching, it will be interesting to see how they fare against some of the division’s top sides.

Frank Lampard’s outfit still have to face three of the top four in Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland. On top of that, they will host both playoff rivals West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough at the CBS Arena in the closing weeks of the season.

With a variety of goalscoring outlets in the side, The Sky Blues have the squad depth to counter the rapid turnover of fixtures. Attacking threat such as Haji Wright, Ellis Simms and Ephron Mason-Clark should help see them lock in a playoff spot.

Coventry City fans don’t necessarily have the strongest love for the Championship Playoffs after they collapsed to the hands Luton Town in the 2023 final, by way of spot kicks. Their devastating experience of Wembley heartbreak is something that has needed time to heal. Should they reach the playoffs, they will certainly be looking to fix past mistakes.
