The Top 5 Contenders For The League Two Golden Boot

04/03/25 21:59

EFL League Two has 12 games left for many teams in the division, but the focus is not only on who wins the title and who makes the playoffs, the golden boot race is still in full throttle. There are many candidates still in the running, with some honourable mentions also. This list is based of their current goalscoring record, with those leading the race currently the most likely to bag the award come May.

1. Alassana Jatta - 16 Goals (Notts County)

There are three players on 16 goals but Jatta has the least amount of minutes played, scoring 16 in 26.3 90s. The Gambian international was snapped up by Notts County just over a year ago after struggling for minutes at Danish top flight club Viborg. In the second half of last season Jatta went on a streak of five goals in 10 League Two appearances and has carried on that form in 2024/25.

The tall striker has never gone more than three league games without a goal when available this season, and has also scored in the FA and League Cup bringing his total tally to 19. Jatta had offers from Championship clubs in January, if he keeps up his scoring ability he could be the man to take home the golden boot, Notts County up to League One and himself a move to the second tier. It’s also notable that unlike his counterparts on 16 goals, Jatta has not scored a single penalty this season.

2. Michael Cheek - 16 Goals (Bromley)

Cheek has 16 goals in 30.7 90s and has started almost every game for the promoted Bromley this season as their talisman. This is his sixth season at the club he has scored 120 goals for and the step up to the EFL was a challenge he took to easily scoring six in his first nine league games. His goals have been a huge part of Bromley’s journey to a stable top 10 finish.

At the age of 33, if you look back at Cheek’s career he has been prolific everywhere and he is already a Bromley legend. If he wins the golden boot he will follow in Macaulay Langstaff’s footsteps by joining a small group of newly promoted player’s to win the golden boot on first attempt.

3. Matthew Stevens - 16 Goals (AFC Wimbledon)

The final player on 16 goals is Matty Stevens who has played 27.5 90s. Stevens is an EFL journeyman recently playing for the likes of Stevenage, Walsall and Forest Green Rovers, who he left last summer. Some of the highlights of this season have been a hat-trick against Carlisle, and braces against Barrow and Crewe Alexandra. Like Notts Coutny, Wimbledon have a great chance of promotion this season and Stevens will want the chance to prove himself at the third tier.

4. Nathan Lowe - 15 Goals (Walsall)

Lowe has an impressive 15 goals 20.2 90s and it’s safe to say the young Stoke City loanee is carrying Walsall to League One. The West Midlands club are four points clear at the top of the league and have scored 11 more goals than any other club in the league. If his team can continue to produce goals then Lowe is certain to be within a chance of taking home the golden boot at 19 years old.

5. David McGoldrick - 13 Goals (Notts County)

Everyone knew McGoldrick was going to tear up the fourth tier when he made the jump down from Derby County in League One. Just a few years ago the Irish international was Sheffield United’s top scorer in the Premier League so his talent was never a question. The fact there are two Notts County players on this list shows how lethal the McGoldrick-Jatta strike partnership is, Stuart Maynard has had a selection choice on his hands as at times they’ve had to fight it out for the striker spot.

Honourable Mentions

Luke Molyneux (Doncaster Rovers), Harry Smith (Swindon Town), Andy Cook (Bradford City) have all scored 12 goals this season and are outsiders for the golden boot if they were to hit a purple patch in the run in. Andy Cook was the golden boot winner at Bradford in 2022/23 so is experienced in this field. Moylneux’s goalscoring has been impressive as he has mainly been employed as a winger this season.

All data and statistics are taken as of 3rd March 2025.
