Champions League football returns this week – finally, time for some knockout action! Eight games will be played across Tuesday and Wednesday night as sides look to get the upper hand in their knockout play-off ties in a bid to seal a pot in the knockout rounds proper.

It is a stacked lineup – Tuesday will see Galatasaray host Juventus, Real Madrid travel to Benfica, who beat them in their league phase meeting, Borussia Dortmund welcome Atalanta, and Monaco visit PSG in an all-French clash.

Things don’t slow down on Wednesday either, as the miniature trio of Olympiakos, Club Brugge and Bodo/Glimt take on Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan, respectively, while Newcastle, the only English representatives in the play-off round, pay a visit to Qarabag, who managed a creditable draw against compatriots Chelsea in the league phase.

Galatasaray vs Juventus and Qarabag vs Newcastle will be Tuesday and Wednesday’s early kick-offs, getting started at 5:45 GMT, while the rest will begin at 8pm. All games will be televised, and if you want to stay up to date with your bet/bets, you can view any of the eight games on TNT Sports.

Why We Are Backing This Bet

Benfica to Bring Battle: Real Madrid may be the undisputed masters of Champions League football, but they have been looking far from themselves in recent weeks. Aside from Mbappe’s constant goals, they have been relatively uninspired and haven’t been walking all over La Liga opposition as they usually would.

This was highlighted by their league phase performance against Benfica back in January, where Los Blancos fell to a surprise 4-2 defeat. Benfica will remember it for other reasons – goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin netted that all-important fourth goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time. That goal is the only reason Benfica have made it this far – without it, they would’ve been sent home early, so we expect Jose Mourinho’s side to throw everything at this tie once again.

Home Bragging Rights: In the only same-country clash of the round, PSG travel south to the Mediterranean coast to face age-old rivals, Monaco. Reigning champions of Europe and sitting six places above their Monagasque counterparts, the Parisians are heavy favourites to advance over two legs here.

This tie will come down to the result here – with home advantage, Monaco could cause some unexpected damage. However, even if you take into account PSG’s rather dicey recent form, which includes an away defeat to Monaco back at the end of November, the knockout stage usually brings the best out of Luis Enrique’s side. It won’t be one-sided, but PSG will take a lead into the home leg in a week's time.

Drama in Dortmund: Dortmund don’t have the best recent record against Italian sides. Across their last three Champions League meetings with their southern neighbours, DER BVB have picked up just one measly point and haven’t beaten Italian opposition since a win over AC Milan back in November 2023.

However, when they do face Italian sides, they tend to put on a show – their league phase thriller, a 4-4 draw with Juventus, being the perfect example – and now facing an Atalanta side who will be sure to provide an intriguing clash of style, this Italy vs Germany clash should once again bring some high drama, with goals at both ends.

Topsy-Turvy Toon: Onto Wednesday’s games now, and onto the ever-unpredictable Newcastle United, who, despite conceding a joint-second lowest goal tally (7) in the league phase, somehow contrived to miss out on the automatic round of 16 football.

Facing one of the competition's dark horses in Qarabag, who have stolen points off of Chelsea, Copenhagen, Frankfurt and Benfica, and saw a competition leading 34 goals go in across the eight league fixtures, this game is the perfect watch for the neutral, promising plenty of goals and a whiff of an upset.

Bodo to Frustrate Inter: This leg is where the value is at. The dealbreaker of this acca, Bodo must somehow resist the strike pairing of Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram for you to earn full value from it.

The Norwegian side have been a surprise package at the tournament so far, and have managed to grab huge wins over Atletico Madrid and Man City in their last two games. We don’t think lightning will strike a third time here, but Bodo have shown themselves to be able to fight fire with fire, and we reckon this will be an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Madrid Momentum: Back to a slightly safer leg now, and over to Atletico Madrid, who, aside from a stunning 4-0 trouncing of Barcelona last week, have gone goalless in three of their last five games across all competitions.

Facing an in-form Club Brugge side with five wins in six, this will be a tough test for Simeone’s inconsistent side. When they aren’t at the races, they are utterly woeful to watch, but when they are fit and firing, the trio of Antoine Griezmann, Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alavarez are a pleasure to watch. Though Belgium is a tough place to go, we think Atletico will find their stride here.
