Vancouver Whitecaps vs LAFC: An MLS Cup Final Worthy Match

As hinted at in the heading above, this fixture should really be played further into the postseason than the Western Conference semi-final, but due to LAFC’s inconsistency before Son Heung-Min arrived, and a tricky little San Diego side, the Black and Gold had to settle for a 3rd placed finish in the West.

It has been a joy to watch Vancouver’s revival under Jesper Sørensen this season. A side that was previously nowhere near MLS Cup contention quickly became early-season favourites thanks to Brian White’s form in front of goal, and the efforts of 2025 MLS Defender of the Year Tristan Blackmon.

LAFC, on the other hand, was expected to get this far. It was at this point a year ago that Steve Cherundolo’s side exited the play-offs, a factor that will drive their desperation to earn a second-ever MLS Cup, after their triumphs in 2022.

The MLS season is one of the longest out there due to the playoff format, and early expectations are often out the window by the time November rolls around. That’s why the signings of Son and Thomas Müller for either side were so integral.

The pair have entered the frame in Canada and California, instantly blending with the squad to create effective partnerships.

For Son, it was Denis Bouanga with whom he formed a dynamic duo; the pair have scored 24 goals between them since the South Korean legend joined the league and show no sign of stopping.

Müller’s relationship with youthful USMNT midfielder Sebastian Berhalter has been an unlikely but inspiring story as well.

Both Vancouver and Los Angeles racked up over 70 goals in the regular season, placing them both within the top five highest-scoring MLS outfits. Both stand a realistic chance of lifting the MLS Cup, so in a one-off knockout fixture for a spot in the final four, why wouldn’t there be goals? That’s why Over 2.5 Goals has been selected for this fixture.

Usually, selecting a Both Teams to Score bet in a fixture involving the Whitecaps or LAFC would be risky, as their defences are top tier (Vancouver conceded 1.1 goals per game and LAFC conceded 1.2). However, due to the strong attacking football on display, there’s no chance that either side will finish the game goalless.

This game could go either way; it's a must-watch and incredibly hard to predict, but since the beginning of September, LAFC has been THE form team in the MLS. They also have a wicked away record that has seen them lose once on the road in the league since the beginning of April. That’s why LAFC to Win is the go-to choice here.

San Diego vs Minnesota United: MLS Newbies Take On Ramsay’s Resilient Loons

Expansion teams are an intriguing aspect of the MLS that is unique to the league, and it often goes one of two ways for the debutants. You have cases like Cincinnati, which began its MLS existence with back-to-back-to-back rock-bottom finishes. You then have St Louis City, which won the Western Conference in its debut season.

San Diego is another story of instant glory. Mikey Varas’ side set the points record for an expansion team (63), with one of the best away records to ever grace the league.

Lining up on the opposing touchline is Minnesota, led by young Welsh coach Eric Ramsay, who was formerly part of the coaching team at Manchester United. The Loons have built a reputation for defensive grit, becoming one of the most horrid teams to face in the league.

Minnesota handed us one of the surprise results of the first round, proving that you don’t have to win to progress in the playoffs. They beat a reputable Seattle Sounders side twice on penalties to advance.

San Diego themselves know the frustration of playing Minnesota. It was just two months ago that they lost 3-1 to their playoff opponents despite recording 28 shots and 66% possession. All five goals in that game came in the second half, and Minnesota are known for their late goals, which is why Both Teams to Score in the 1st Half (No) is a reasonable tip for this game.

It feels like Ramsay has taken Minnesota as far as possible this season. He’s already handed the club arguably the greatest season in their history and has beaten all expectations. The departure of Tani Oluwaseyi to Villareal should also be factored in, as the Loons have had to cope without their star goalscorer since August.

They barely scraped past the Sounders, and in a one-off tie without home support, San Diego to Win looks like the sensible option for this game. On top of that, in their last eight games, Minnesota have scored 3 goals on two occasions, making an Under 2.5 Goals for Minnesota United selection another quality pick.
