Sheffield Wednesday have had a nightmare start to the season. Of course, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering everything that has emerged off the pitch, but the Owls have only picked up one point from five games in the Championship. They drew away to Wrexham, which was a good result, but then they have also lost to Bristol City, Swansea, Stoke and Leicester. This now puts Wednesday 23rd in the league table, one place above rock bottom and their arch rivals Sheffield United. However, they have succeeded in the EFL Cup so far, after beating Bolton Wanderers and Premier League outfit Leeds United both on penalties to get them where they are now.
Grimsby have had a fabulous start to the new campaign. They currently sit fifth in the EFL League Two table, after collecting 15 points from their opening six games. The Mariners have won four games in the league against each of MK Dons, Walsall, Newport and Crawley, but unfortunately lost to Bristol Rovers in the process. Their other three games against Cambridge, Accrington and Harrogate all ended up as draws. David Artell’s men have also performed incredibly throughout the EFL Cup. They beat Shrewsbury Town in the first round, which warranted a tie against Manchester United in the second round. In that matchup, Grimsby took a 2-0 lead and although it was then levelled by United, the hosts won on penalties to reach the current stage.
These two sides have only faced each other once in recent years, which came as another EFL Cup game. It was last season’s second round in August 2024 and Sheffield Wednesday were the victors.

Jamal Lowe (Wednesday) - Although the forward hasn’t yet amassed an abundance of goals for Sheffield Wednesday, he did manage to score against Leeds in the last round. The Jamaican has plenty of experience under his belt and could be a key player against Grimsby.
Charles Vernam (Grimsby) - The winger has already tallied up two goals and two assists in League Two this season, in their eight games. Furthermore, he was the star player against Manchester United in the last round, after opening the scoring and then assisting Tyrell Warren’s goal.
